[Charlotte's POV]
'Right.' Eugene whispered. 'Did you lose them or are they dead?'
'Probably both now.' The man mumbled.
Eugene took an irritated deep breath in. 'No, that's not what I'm asking. Did you see them die? Or did they just not get on the bus home?'
'We didn't see them die but-'
'That's good enough for me!' Eugene grinned taking my hand and pulling me away. 'We'll look for them ourselves.'
'I'm afraid that wouldn't be-'
'Don't care!' Eugene threw over his shoulder as we made our way down the corridor. He held my hand tightly as we walked away from the man.
''Gene.' I mumbled. '... We can't leave everyone to go search.'
'What do you mean?' He frowned, not even turning to look at him.
'I mean, Payton and Daryl will find their own way home if they are alive which they probably are, we can't leave Luke alone again, the kid can barely get off his feet, what if something was to happen while we were gone?' I gently pulled my hand away from his.
'Ben and Demi are here.'
'I haven't seen Demi since yesterday and Ben said himself he's working late tonight, one or both of us have to stay. Payton and Daryl can look after themselves, I trust them that much.' I whispered.
'Then we take Luke with us-'
'No.'
'Then I go alone!'
'No!' I growled. 'No, Eugene, you have no idea where they are, how many walkers there are and how tricky it will be to get home, you're staying here and if Payton and Daryl aren't back before sunrise then we head out tomorrow, that way Ben can take the day off and if Demi shows her face, she can come with us.'
Eugene groaned and moaned but nodded after a few seconds and the two of us headed back to our room.
When we went back in, Luke was sitting up in his bed, frowning at us. 'What's going on?'
'Just a little difficulty finding everyone.' Eugene mumbled.
'What do you mean?'
'Payton and Daryl didn't come back from the hunt.' I spoke clearly, I wasn't going to lie to the kid, he had every right to know, it did affect him since two of the last hunters in our group were stuck outside our shelter, god knows where. 'And Demi is no where to be found.'
'She probably found a guy and is shacking up with him.' Eugene leaned over and whispered. 'We don't have to worry about her yet.'
Luke nodded and slowly pulled the cover off his tiny, broken body, he twisted out of the bed onto his feet and hobbled over to his wheelchair at the end of the bed, using his bed as a leaning post.
'What are we waiting for then?' He asked. 'Let's go get them.'
'Oh no!' Eugene held his hands up as he trudged over to Luke, he reached forward to pull him out of the chair but Luke pushed his hands away. 'We're not going to get them, they can come back on their own since they'll be ok, and even if we did go, you would not be coming with.'
'Why not?'
'I can't even count as high as the number of broken bones you have and even healed, you're 7.'
'I'm also in a zombie apocalypse.' Luke growled. 'I need to be able to protect myself and others around me, otherwise what am I going to do if I end up alone? Or worse?'
