[Book 2] Chapter 9

[Charlotte's POV]

Demi and I cut through the forest like a knife through butter as we shot every walker in sight, there were a lot now, they'd all somehow gathered in one place and we had bloody ran through them.

'We need to get up a tree.' Demi cried, shooting out to her left. 'We can't fight anymore we're running out of ammo.'

'Climb up a tree? What then?'

'We live another day!' Demi snarled as she ran faster to keep up with me, if she wasn't here I'd be out of this damn forest already but she's so damn slow.

I snarled as I ran to the nearest tree. 'FINE THEN BUT GET YOUR OWN TREE!!!'

I climbed up the tree quickly like a little spider, Demi was quick to follow huffing something about me being childish before we both rested on one of the top branches.

Demi stared at me as the zombies built up around the bottom of the tree. 'What are we going to do?'

'Take them out.' I whispered. 'That's all we can do. For now at least, then we need to get back to the house and tell them about Payton and Ben and-'

'What?' Demi mumbled. 'What will they do? Apart from Eugene and Daryl, we're the strongest fighters in the group, Ben's the smart one and Payton's the risk taker, we lost two of our strongest, Charlotte, and they looked they they went down easily, as much as I want them back, we can't risk the groups little amount of safety we have left.'

'But wouldn't it be because those two are two of our strongest that we need them back!' I growled. 'Our man power is lower than ever! So many of us are dying! We're losing, Demi, we're losing, we haven't got any more time. We need to tell the group and unless they are mad at us, they will decide what is best.'

'I don't see our chances. None of them like Payton and Ben was just better at healing than some of the females, they can survive without either of them.'

'Well I can't!!' I snapped. 'They're my best friends, now and forever, I already lost so many, Payton hasn't always been the closest friend to me, not Ben either. I had a best friend... Pippa.'

Demi sighed as she prepared herself for my story telling.

'For the first few months of our friendship, it took me a while to understand and grow to love her personality, sometimes she could appear a little selfish and could be annoying... I didn't invite her to my birthday party once for that reason, but I grew to understand that I had to take her as she was because, she was like a sister to me, she used to knit me all these cool scarves and phone socks, she was funny and we would talk in all our lessons since we were in a lot together, given our intellect and all... Then one day, we stopped talking, I don't know how or why, nothing had changed, college had been and went, we were working girls... But... We didn't talk.'

'Did you try to talk to her?' Demi asked.

'No...' I confessed. 'I was so fixated on getting into university and training to be a history teacher that I barely spoke to anyone, I went for weeks without contacting my family even though they meant so much to be, I was so determined to sort out my life, I wanted to settle it, I wanted complications to go away and I just wanted life to be a regular thing, no surprises...'

No social life...

'The only reason I stayed in touch with Payton and Ben was because Payton bloody invited herself round for sleepovers at my flat all the time when her and her mum fought and Ben was a generally concerned friend and called me every Sunday at 6, on the dot...'

'Did you ever talk to Pippa again?'

I nodded. 'Just after my first encounter with a walker, when another one of my friends died and an old friend was bitten... I called her up straight away and warned her off what was going to happen... I told her to prepare for the zombie apocalypse, at first she thought I was joking since growing up I was always saying how we would all be fighting for our lives against the flesh chewers. So she laughed, said it was nice to talk to me again after so long... But apparently I had called at the wrong time. She was out for coffee with an ex of hers, catching up... After that, I never saw or heard from it, but I didn't stay for long, Payton and I took off only three or four days after that.'
