*Wednesday*

Today was the day that I go with Mom and Dad to court against my grandmother, and I've had an ache of dread in my stomach from the moment I woke up this morning. I dread the moment I see her again, and I hope that after today, I never have to see her again. Mom said that Grandma's looking at pretty much life in prison after everything adds up, which makes me feel better. If she's in jail for that long, or at least until she dies, then she can't come after me.

Mom got out of work early to meet Dad and I at the courthouse, because the session is at two. But, she has to go back when it's over and work extra hours tonight to make up for it. She picked Kaylee up from preschool and left her with my grandparents, whom I got to visit with on Monday.

Yesterday, Mom and Dad got me registered for school and I'll start tomorrow. I'm kind of nervous because I don't know the building and it's somewhat bigger than Caravel was, but I'm only going to have to be there for a few more weeks until school gets out. They're getting out here a week later than the students at Caravel will be. The last day of school is June 18th.

I didn't eat lunch because I really didn't feel like eating. I couldn't stop thinking about that courthouse, the way that I was dragged out of there five years ago, screaming and crying, thinking the entire time that I really was being legally taken from my parents. I just wanted to get through the rest of the day and go to bed so it's all over.

I was sitting in the passenger's seat of the car, staring out the window and trying to distract myself from the dread I felt. I guess I'm still not very good at hiding it, because when the car pulled up to stop at a red light, I heard Dad ask,

"Are you nervous?"

Dodging his question as I turned my head to look at him, I asked, "Are you?"

"No. I'm just an angry king throwing another peasant in the dungeon." He smirked, and I laughed a little, remembering the day he said that to make me feel better after the incident on the playground with Danika. "But I believe I asked you first."

I swallowed hard, looking down at my knees. "Yeah, I guess nervous could be a way to describe it. I know you'll win, there's no way you can't. I just don't want to see her again. She's going to stare at me the entire time, and it would be so much easier if I could do the interrogation in another room via a camera or something, but it doesn't work that way."

"Don't be nervous, Abbie. She can't do anything to you by just looking at you."

"That's not true." I muttered, but I don't think he heard me because he didn't reply to me.

For the rest of the ride there, I played with the rubber bracelet on my right arm. It was a Sublime bracelet that I'd found in Hot Topic one time that I'd been given money to go get clothes and stuff from Aunt Stacy and Uncle Eric.

When we got there, we found where Mom was parked and we were lucky enough to get the spot right beside her. She noticed we were here and we all got out the cars at the same time. We started walking in together, and I trudged along slightly behind them. Just before we went up to the steps, Mom turned around and said to me with a smirk,

"Where's Grandma's 'God' now?"

I laughed, feeling a little better as I suddenly got the image of her sitting in a dark jail cell, praying like hell for God to open the door and let her out. It'd be even better if they put her on a cell block for mentally insane people because she 'talks to herself'.

We worked our way inside, and we had to wait a little while before we could get into the courtroom, like last time. But this time, no one came to take me to a room where I would be all by myself and would entertain myself until my parents got back. This time, I went right into the courtroom with my parents. Papa, Uncle Eric and Aunt Stacy were our witnesses, and after today they leave to go back to Maine. They had come back on Monday before I went to see my grandparents, so they could meet Kaylee and get to know her, and she was really excited to meet them.
