Chapter 40: Left to Die

Saruko's POV:

     I sat at the edge of my cot and stared at the burnt ground. My throat was dry as a desert and my face was covered in sweat. My heart raced as I felt anxious from holding back my feelings. I really want to just explode and confess my crush to Hiroki, ya' know...to get it off my chest. Im really not one to hold back my opinions on certain subjects or feelings for...certain people.

After contemplating my thoughts for a few minutes I felt Katsuko's hand on my shoulder. I snapped out of it and looked up at her.

"Hey...you okay?" She asked.

I stuttered my words and could barely push the words out of my mouth.

"I....I am...uh....Im fine.." I blush.

"Haha...alright, well...we are planning to go back to the main area to see if anyone survived the attack.. If you like...wanna join." She blushed back and rubbed the back of her neck.

My eyes widened as excitement washed over me.

"Yeah.." I casually said.

"Alright be ready in 10.." She said, walking away.

As I got up from my cot, I saw Hiroki. He was lost in thought too.. I can tell. He is pretty much just sitting there. I walk over and pat his head.

"Hiroki?" I asked.

He jumped in terror..

"Um..sorry to scare you, bro." I shuttered.

"*breathes heavily* its okay..I was just thinking about someone." Hiroki insisted.

"Katsuko?" I asked.

"N-no..." He frowned.

"I cant get Arnia out of my head, I feel guilty." He covered his face with his dirty hands.

"Do you like her?" I dared to ask.

"Maybe, just a little?" He stuttered.

I half smiled to pity him, I insisted itd be okay and left to catch up with Katsuko.

Once we get to a street, we have Katsuko, Hiroki, Arnia, Katsuko's mom/dad and I to search for potential helpers in this madness.

I just wonder what is next, with Hiroki and Katsuko, will they continue to date? Ergh, both asking me to help but I just dont know what to say anymore.

We walk and Arnia and Hiroki are chatting up a storm while Katsuko sits there awkwardly.

"Hey.." I said.

"*sighs* Hello.." Katsuko said, looking at them.

I looked down and looked back up at her.

"Hiroki...told me stuff.." I blurted.

"Stuff? What stuff?" She asked, cocking her head.

"He said....."

I dont know what to say, I dont want her being mad.

"He said that he likes you a lot, he'd never hurt you.." I lied.

She smiled,

"Alright, *looks at them, looks back* I am trusting you." She smiled at me.

I feel awful for lying, but what else can I do?

We approach a group of 5 people, a little girl, a little boy, a mother, a father, and a baby.

They were rough looking, I can tell they were attacked personally by the Krakens.

We run over and ask if everyones okay.

"We are fine, sort of." The mother insisted.

"NO WE ARE NOT! THESE BIG SQUIDDY THINGS SMASHED OUR HOUSE AND TRIED TO KILL US!!!" The little boy said.

"SHUT UP!" The little girl yelled at him.

"YOU!" He pushed her slightly.

"Kids!" The father said.

"Anyways..are you guys those...monsters?" The mother asked.

"No we are not." Arnia said.

"Itll be okay guys, we have a plan...maybe." Katsuko said.

"Let us hear!" The little boy yelled.

"*sighs* Well, we plan to band everyone together to stop the race forever." Hiroki said.

"Sounds good. By the way, Im Louis, this is Julie (little girl), this is Henry(little boy), this is Marlene(mother)." The father said.

"Alright...Lets go." I said.

Its good to know we werent the only group of people left to die.

Just then a Kraken spotted us, it squirmed full speed ahead, thrashing its tentacles at us and roaring hellish noises. I grabbed Katsuko's hand without thinking in the slightest. I ran as fast as possible to safety with her.

I see Hiroki leading everyone else to us. The Kraken is still trying to kill us. I look at the family and then look at Katsuko.

"Forgive me.." She says looking at them, just before she goes into wolf form. She runs over and howls extremely loud and the Kraken freaks and gets away as soon as possible.

The family doesnt look too shocked, its like they dont care.

"Sorry.." She said.

"No its okay, it doesnt shock us as weve seen people turn into octopi." The mother laughs.

"Techincally theyre Krakens." I chuckled.

"Ugh, shush Saruko." Katsuko playfully pushed me slightly and giggled.

After we talked to the family about what to do next, Hirok and I walked back to the fireplace.

"So, how do you feel?" I asked.

"Ergh, I still dont know at this point." He sighed.

I looked into the fire.

"I think I like Katsuko.." I said.
