The next day was Tuesday. I pulled into Sam's driveway early in the morning and honked. His sister, Layla, came out of the house a few moments later.
"Hi, Piper." She said. "Sam already left for school."
"Oh..." I replied. "OK, thanks."
Layla smiled. "You look really pretty today."
"Thank you." I said. "See you later, kiddo."
She waved as I drove away.
Why the hell was Sam already at school? We always drove to school together, no matter what.
I pulled into the school parking lot. It was busy as usual. I found a parking spot that was pretty crappy and made my way into the school courtyard.
I spotted Sam. He was with his 'friends.' Ilana was over there too. She was all over him. There was something inside of me that was completely enraged. It felt weird. Was I jealous?
I walked over to Sam and tapped his shoulder. "Hey." I said looking up to him. "Why are you here so early?"
"Ilana stopped by my house early this morning." Sam replied. "She wanted to give me a ride."
"She knows where you live?" I muttered.
Sam looked at me like I was crazy. "Yeah... She does..."
"Creeper." I whispered.
Ilana gave me a look that had bitch written all over it. "Are you... jealous... Piper?"
I crossed my arms. "No. I told you yesterday, Sam and I are best friends, that's all."
"Good." Ilana stepped closer. "He's mine."
Sam came between us. "Whoa, there, ladies. No need to fight. We don't want someone pushed into a glass table again."
"Sam!" I yelled.
"Sorry." He mumbled.
Ilana held Sam's arm. "He's mine." She mouthed to me. "You bitch."
Sam stepped away from Ilana. "Can we talk, Piper?"
"Yeah." I followed Sam as he walked away from the group.
"What is up with you today?" He asked.
I sighed. "She's, like, in love with you!" I exclaimed. "It's gross!"
"Every girl in this school loves me!" Sam said.
I put my hands on my hips. "All but one- me. Remember, we're just best friends?"
Sam raised his eyebrows. "Is someone jealous?"
"No!" I shouted. "Why would I be jealous? We're friends."
"Do we need to do this the hard way?" He asked.
I stepped back. "No! I don't like you. I;m not jealous. We're friends. OK?"
Sam laughed. "Don't worry, I don't like Ilana. She's too upfront with everything. I'm never riding to school with her again."
"Good." I smiled. "I missed you this morning. The car ride was so boring."
He kissed my head. "I missed you too."
"Somehow, this all of a sudden got mushy." I laughed.
"So do you like me or not?" Sam changed the subject.
My jaw dropped. "What?!"
"Answer the question." He protested.
I shook my head.
"You always turn things all girl-y and happy and love-y and weird. Why is that? You must like me or something." Sam smiled. "Come on."
"No." I said flatly. "Over my dead body."
Sam laughed. "Good. That would be... weird."
OK, why was Sam so curious if I liked him or not? I didn't even know if I liked him or not. I mean, we're such good friends. Wouldn't that just ruin our relationship? But he was so curious. Was that a sign that he liked me? You know, we might be kind of cute together. No, Piper! Snap out of it! You don't like Sam.
