After school on Friday, I drove Sam and I home. We made small talk in my car and just talked as best friends.
"Listen, Piper, my parents are out of town for the night and Layla's at her friend's house. You should come over tonight and we can hang out like old times." Sam smiled as he spoke. "You know, if you want."
"Yeah, sure, that'll be fun." I answered. "I just have to go home and get some stuff."
Sam nodded. "OK, I'll just go with you then we'll both go to my place. You know, save gas."
"Yes, of course!" I said sarcastically.
I drove us to my house and, surprisingly, Haley and Mom were home.
Sam and I walked in through the front door and saw Mom yelling at Haley in the front room. I glanced at Sam and mouthed, "Be quiet, I want to hear this."
"But Mom!" Haley yelled.
"No, Haley, you don't understand. This is a big responsibility. Your only a senior in high school. You won't be able to handle all this." Mom put her hands on her hips and hung her head down. "You just don't understand how-"
Sam bumped into the side table and some keys rattled.
"Piper, Sam, hi." Mom looked up at us.
I looked at them both confused. "What's going on?"
"Nothing. I'll tell you later. Just go upstairs." Mom shook her head. I could tell that she had been crying. "Go, Piper."
"I'm going to Sam's house for the night." I said. "Is that OK?"
Mom nodded. "Yeah, whatever. That's fine."
I looked at Sam and we both went upstairs to my room. I shut the door and we both plopped down on my bed.
"What is going on?!" I asked.
"No clue!" Sam replied. "Probably pointless drama."
There was a silence.
"Hurry up and get your stuff so we can get away from this." Sam encouraged.
I laughed and started getting my things.
When I was all ready, Sam and I quickly went downstairs. Mom and Haley were still fighting but this time, both of them were crying. Sam and I glanced at each other and ran out of the house even faster.
"That was weird." I said as I got into y car.
Sam nodded. "I'm staying out of that! I don't even want to know what that's about!"
When the two of us got to Sam's house, Sam unlocked the front door for me and told me to go in and that he'd be there in a second. I went inside, put my things in his room, and waited for him to come back in the living room.
"Guess what I found?!" Sam yelled as he came in through the front door.
I looked at him curiously. "What?"
"Beer." He answered. "And wine and a bunch of other alcohol that we're not supposed to have."
"And so you brought it in here for what reason?" I giggled.
Sam sat next to me with a beer in his hand. "We're going to drink it, silly."
"But then tonight won't be like old times." I said softly.
He looked down. "Oh... Your right." Sam sighed then looked up. "It'll be better!"
I laughed out loud at Sam. "Sounds good to me!"
