Anaïs groaned when her cell phone went off. It was a Saturday and she had planned to spend the whole day in bed. She pulled a pillow over her head as she tried to ignore the phone call but eventually sat up and searched through the sheets for her Smartphone. The blackout curtains she’d had installed were finally closed for the first time in weeks and even with her amazing Vampiric vision she took forever to locate the little demon. Too lazy to check the caller ID, Anaïs was fairly surprised when she heard Ryder’s voice saying hello. It brought back memories that she didn’t exactly wish to remember on her one day off from work.

“Bonjour Ryder, is something wrong with Nik?”

The silence that followed her question worried her. If something was wrong with him-

“No, Nikolas is fine. Or at least that’s what I heard from Iris last week. I was actually calling about you. Has anything strange happened to you?”

“Strange… well does finally getting a day off count? Cause in my book that’s pretty strange.”

“No… I had a vision.”

Oh no, Anaïs thought, not again. She remembered how he had fallen to the ground in agony and was immediately overcome with concern. Was he ill? Had the vision hurt him physically?

“It concerned you,” Ryder continued, “and worried me a little. I think it’s something I should discuss with you in person.”

“In person?”

“Yes, I could-”

“No we can’t see each other.”

There was another pause. Anaïs wondered what he was thinking. Her refusal had sounded abrupt, even to her, and she hoped he hadn’t taken it the wrong way. She just didn’t know how she would react if she saw him in France where she had first met Jacque.

“Anaïs I’m honestly worried for you. I swear this isn’t something I made up to-”

“No, I know, I believe you. It’s just-”

“You’re being followed.”

The hair at the back of her neck stood on end as she processed what Ryder had said. If he said she was being followed, then she was, because every one of his visions had been true so far; she had no reason to doubt this one.

“Do you know who’s following me?” she asked, her voice faltering a little.

Anaïs was no stranger to fear. Immortality had not made her invulnerable, that she knew very well. A cut still hurt, a bullet could still kill, and her body had its limits as any human body did. If this stalker was dangerous…

“I saw him briefly and I’m sure I could recognize him if I saw him in person but I don’t know his name or intentions. I did see that he was watching you through the window across from yours.”
