Jacky found she couldn’t sleep; she tossed and turned in bed but try as she might, she could not give herself over to her dreams. There were too many thoughts in her mind, too many worries to keep her awake. Jacky slipped out of the apartment silently and crossed the dark street. It was just around 4 in the morning and Jacky knew every other sane person was already asleep.

The street was lit by several lampposts but they were so spread apart she all but disappeared in the shadows between them. Jacky wasn’t one to frighten easily but she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being followed. She stopped directly below a lamppost; her heart picking up speed as she surveyed the area. She kept seeing the shadows shift as if there were people walking within them but logically she knew that was not the case. Jacky was imagining things but the feeling of being followed was very much real.

“If you think you’re frightening me,” she raised her voice so that it carried down the street, “You’re sadly mistaken.”

It was a lie, of course, but Jacky knew it was the best way to engage an attacker. If he or she believed she was afraid, Jacky would immediately become an easy target.

“I guess that would matter if I was trying to frighten you but I’m not.”

Jacky clenched her teeth to keep from gasping. The voice was near; much closer than she had anticipated.

“Dominic?” she asked.

She knew it was him; she could recognize the sexy timbre of his voice anywhere though she had truly only heard it once before.

“It’s not safe for a woman to be out this late alone.”

“No?” she asked as he emerged from the shadows, “and why is that?”

“Any sort of person could be walking about. Any sort of creature.”

“Like yourself.”

“Yes,” Dominic agreed, “I suppose so though I’m hardly dangerous.”

Jacky wasn’t entirely convinced of that but she chose not to comment. If he wanted to play the role of innocent vampire she certainly wasn’t about to endanger herself by calling him out on it.

“So what are you doing walking around? Do you live nearby?” she asked instead.

As much as she wanted to catch him in a lie, she also wanted him to have a viable excuse. She needed this attraction she felt for him to make sense and it wouldn’t be rational if he turned out to be a psycho stalker.

“I wanted to come see you actually. I forget sometimes that I’m probably the only one who’s awake at this hour. I was about to return home when I saw you walk out. Coincidence?”

“You wanted to see me? Why?”

“I’d like to ask you for a favor but I’d rather discuss it over dinner. Would you like to come over tomorrow night?”
