Jacky’s heart jumped into her throat when the doorknob began to jiggle. It was turned first to the left and then the right with far too much patience.

She clenched her teeth and prepared to put up one hell of a fight.

The second the door burst open, she pounced on the intruder. The scream she released was partly from fright and partly from adrenaline. Her ankle was burning but she ignored the sting and lashed out blindly. Her fist connected with a jaw made of stone and it hurt enough to cause her to pause. She’d expected an animal, but her hand had connected with smooth human skin.

He morphed back?

Jacky looked up as her arms were restrained behind her back. The face was that of Dominic’s but…

“God damn it woman, stop wriggling!”

Jacky instinctively made another effort to get free before becoming limp. The struggle had left her breathless and physically exhausted. She was confused enough to give in and hopeful enough to trust the man she knew was the real Dominic.

“Is that animal out there yours?”

“What?” Jacky asked, slightly lightheaded.

She had lost quite a bit of blood; maybe too much.

“I doubt he was anyone close, seeing as he took a bite out of you-”

“-how do you know he bit me?”

“-but if he was, seeing as he’s currently dead, I’m in the awkward position of apologizing,” Dominic finished, his hold becoming more of an embrace.

He noticed her pallid face and distant eyes a moment before her knees buckled. Dominic pulled her into his arms, cradling her against his chest, as she reached up to touch his face. Her hand cupped his cheek, her lips curved into a smile, and she chuckled.

Dominic was convinced that the blood loss was causing her to act delusional but the sigh she released when her smile faded told him otherwise.

“He’s dead? Did he say anything?”

“He didn’t have to. The împaratesc have been looking for that man for centuries. I’m part of the team that was put together to locate him. I was in Romania; I had to alert the counsel that I was close to capturing him but it appears the bastard stole my face and broke into my damn house.”

“The împaratesc?”

Dominic looked down at the woman he had dreamed of every night since he had first laid eyes on her and frowned. He had revealed a lot about his world and yet, he knew nothing about her. He would have to take her to the counsel to get her memory cleared; it was the simplest solution.

“You need medical attention. I’ll explain everything afterwards.”
