Jacqueline Davis, more commonly known as “Jacky”, couldn’t care less that it was two in the afternoon and that her phone was ringing; she didn’t care because she had just gotten home from a long three week, in-depth abduction case that she had finally brought to a close and had planned to get some well-deserved sleep. She had barely settled down on the soft comforter before her cell-phone started chirping. Jacky ignored it for as long as she could but curiosity got the best of her. She couldn’t help but worry that it was involved with her recent case.
“Hello?” she muttered, her New York accent thick as ever.
No matter how much she traveled, it never quite went away.
“Ah, I see that New York charm hasn’t left you.”
“Ryder? Goddamn it’s been a long time! How are you sweetie? How’s the shoulder?
Damn, to think I almost ignored this call. Oh! Give me a second will you? I just got home
and I haven’t even opened the shades. It’s like a tomb in here,” Jacky chuckled as she
nearly fell out of bed to get to the window.
She tended to ramble on about inconsequential things when she spoke with friends and this time it was no different. She summarized her case for Ryder, told him about her niece’s first loose tooth, and chided him for staying away so long- she was talkative and vivacious like always while he listened with friendly curiosity. Ryder slowly made his purpose known, when she finished, by asking her if she was too busy at the moment to take on another case.
“Well I suppose not,” she answered as she prepared herself a cup of coffee, “why? What do you have in mind?”
“It’s a case I’m working on now.”
“Oh? Sounds like you’re involved?”
“Well of course-”
“No, involved involved… the type of involved we mediums always try to stay away from. It’s a woman isn’t it?”
“See that’s the problem with us psychics,” Ryder chuckled, “We’re too good at guessing correctly.”
“Darling, what I do isn’t guessing,” Jacky playfully stuck her tongue out at him though she knew he couldn’t see, “I know your past, your present, and your future.”
“All that huh?”
“All that and more.”
“What more could you possibly know?” Ryder chuckled.
“Well I know that you like ’em tall, blonde, and busty. I know that you have a lot of black
underwear and that you scream like a manly man when a vampire twists your arm completely out of its socket. I also know, and don’t you dare disagree, that it didn’t affect you one bit when you walked in on me changing and I’ll admit I’m glad because sexy as hell, though you may be, I saw you as a brother from the instant that you ripped that vampire off my neck.”
