STAY LOVELY XX
NATE’S POINT OF VIEW
“Hey Katrina? I was wondering if you wanted to go out on a date with me tomorrow around 7?” I asked her through the phone. It turns out, she actually texted me so I had her number after the party and we had a lot more in common than I would’ve thought. She could be the girl to help me get over my crazy feelings for Amber. “Sure thing! Text me about the details? See you then!” She replied to me before we said our goodbyes and she hung up the phone. I finally had a date tonight. I’m not exactly used to this type of stuff but she’s gorgeous and maybe Amber will help me out. Yeah, that’s it. I’ll go over to Amber’s place and she can tell me what to do on a date. This will be my first official date. Ever. I want everything to be perfect. I’ve read stuff online about how to treat a girl, its just natural instinct but like the whole date thing isn’t. Walking over to Amber’s place, like I always do, I started to hum Skillet’s new song “Rise” to myself and before I knew it, I was standing at the front door. Today was pretty cool so therefore I had on some dark jeans and a hoodie, nothing special. I knocked on the door only to find that Amber opened it. Today she had her hair in a messy bun while wearing some leggings and a big t-shirt placed over them. Her makeup was smeared from last night, because she obviously didn’t take it off. “Well. Don’t stand there out in the cold, dummy. Come on in.” She told me, while yawning. Obviously, she had just woken up. “Thanks. Amber. I’ll be your bestest friend in the history of best friends if you help me with something.” “Well, it depends on what that something is. I’m not doing any type of manual labor for you because I’m so tired from that party.” She replied stubbornly. If you saw her, you wouldn’t believe that she’s the freaky runner girl. She’s super lazy when she’s not running. “I have a date tonight and I’m kind of freaking out. What do girls like on first dates?” “Aweee little Nate has a first date tonight…” She cooed at me while ruffling my hair afterwards. “Yeah, yeah. Just help me, okay?” “And why would I help you?” She questioned me. Well, she did have a good point but I guess I just wanted her to. “Please?” I said, almost begging. She paused, pretending to think about her answer. “Fine. I’ll help my best friend. Why not?” I hugged her tightly. “Dude, you’re messing up my hair.” She blankly stated. “There was something to mess up?” I shot back at her. “You know, I don’t have to help you.” “Good point. But you love me, so you still are. And plus, you agreed to it.” I replied. “Whatever, let’s go to my room before I change my mind.” I followed her there, even though I already knew the way myself. When I reached her messy room, I sat down on her un-made bed and made myself comfortable. “Hey, I said I would help you, not that you could sleep over. Up, buddy.” “Sorry! Gosh, is someone on their period today?” Her face started to turn red and she didn’t have to say anything to know that I was right. “Shut up.” She mumbled to me. I raised my hands defensively “Okay, okay. Sorry about that. Can I go and get you our drink from Waverly’s? Do you need any Advil? Here, sit down and I’ll get you anything you need.” I quickly spit out. I knew how this works since I’ve known Amber for a while. PMS is seriously the worst thing ever invented. Especially if the girl is already mad at you. PMS jokes don’t get a laugh out of them, trust me, I know these things from experience. “Waverly’s sounds nice. I’ll have to say no on the Advil for now, but keep it on hand for me, will you?” She replied. “Okay. You stay here. I’ll be right back with your drink.” I told her. I ran out to my car and started to head for the famous Coffee shop. I guess It’s not the most fancy thing ever, but we love it. It’s family owned by this pastor and his wife. There are only two stores out there, one in my town and one in a town a few miles away. I parked my car outside of the shop, and walked in. It beats Starbucks by a long shot in my opinion. “Hello, I would love two chocolate Chais. One large, and one small.” I told the nice worker there. “Okay. That will be $9.50 please.” She replied. “Gosh. Now I see why we usually split these things. Are you a new worker here? I’m here quite often and I don’t recognize you.” “I actually am. I recognize you though. You’re Nate, right? I’m Ronnie. Ronnie from the party? Remember me?” Oh yeah, now I see it. She looks a lot different when she’s not trying to look skimpy and attract the male population. “Oh yeah, sorry. You look a little different from that night, that’s all. It’s great to see you!” I replied. “You too, here are your drinks!” She said, while handing me the two chocolate Chais. The large one is for Amber, obviously, and I got a small one. I’ve got to stay healthy to keep up with my running habits. I grabbed the drinks and headed back to my car. As I was pulling into the driveway of Amber’s place, I noticed a car that I hadn’t seen before. Walking inside, heading to Amber’s room, I heard voices inside. Now I know it’s mean to eavesdrop but, it was just so tempting. “But you don’t like this guy? Right?” The unknown voice asked. “I don’t know. He’s my best friend. He kissed me earlier-“ “WAIT. He kissed you and you didn’t happen to call me?” The unknown voice said again. “Yeah, and I got mad at him for it and we didn’t talk for like a week. Now he’s talking to Katrina. He met her at a party we went to after we had made up.” Amber told this mystery girl. I knew that they were talking about me. “But at the same party I kissed Dane and he ran out like a jealous teenage girl.” Amber continued. “You kissed DANE too?” She yelled at Amber. “Umm yeah. It was amazing.” She replied. She didn’t sound too excited about it though. I will never understand girls. First they’re really happy and then they’re like bipolar and all sad again. I knew I wanted to hear where this conversation was going, but I didn’t want to risk being too nosy. I knocked on her door loudly to signal for her to open it. “Oh hey, I see you’re back with the drinks! Thanks!” She replied, sounding rather happy about that. Her friend just looked at me with utter surprise and her mouth was hanging open. “He’s your best friend?” She asked Amber. “Indeed I am.” I answered for her. “The name is Nate. Today I’m Amber’s personal slave, while she gives me advise on the whole dating thing. I have a date tonight and I’m clueless.” She still looked at me funny. Like for real, do I have something on my face or something? “Sorry,” She finally said, “It’s just that you’re not what I expected when she told me about you.” “Oh really? Is that so? Well, sorry I couldn’t live up to your expectations.” I bluntly said. “No, you exceeded them.” She replied to me. She was pretty, and she had curly brown hair. She looked like a bubbly and girly person. Amber is girly, but not extremely girly. She’s perfect. I’m so glad to have her as a best friend. Okay, we have to stop thinking like this. I have a date with Katrina today. She’s the gorgeous one. Hopefully she’s gorgeous on the inside too. Unlike most guys, I actually care about a girl’s personality. She seemed like she did at the party, but I guess I’ll find out tonight. Wait, that reminds me. I have to figure all of that out. Location is a good key. I only have the time. “Hello? Earth to Nate!” Amber screamed at my face. “Oh sorry. Okay, woman. Now teach me how to charm a girl.” I said to her while plopping down onto her very comfortable bed. “What did I say about sitting on my bed?” She asked me while placing a hand onto her hip. Her friend just looked at us in amusement. “Well, I figured that I would be staying for a while, so why not? My date is at 7 and I have nothing to do for the rest of the day. What else do I have better to do today than hang out with my best friend and her acquaintance?” I asked her. She just sighed in defeat, knowing that I had won. I knew that she really didn’t care. Her period just makes her a little crazy. “Okay. Step one to charm a girl, do something slightly romantic. Like thinking a little about the actual date. Step two; compliments are always a nice thing to give. Especially if you’re trying to impress her and get her to like you, girls like to hear compliments from guys, trust me.” She began to tell me. I know some of this stuff, but it just feels like I’m going to mess up everything and this amazing girl will never like me. “Okay,” I replied. “Nate, come on, let’s practice and see if you’re any good at this whole date thing.” Amber said to me. She moved to where she was sitting on the bed too, across from me. “Okay. Now pretend I’m Katrina. Say what you would say to her, to me.” I mentally prepared myself for this one. I just have to imagine Katrina’s face on Amber. Well, that’s easier said than done. “Okay, Amber I think I’m ready.” I told her. “Okay, just do it.” She replied, while her friend just stared at me some more. Like that girl was making me super uncomfortable. I awkwardly cleared my throat and I just wanted to get this over with. “Umm hey Katrina, you look gorgeous today.” I said awkwardly to Amber. “That was good, now keep going!” She told me. “Amber, I can’t do this. I’ll just have to wing it on the date. If she likes me, that’s cool. If, not, then I’ll come to you and you can help me try to win her over. Maybe I’ll sing a song for her, I don’t know.” She started to laugh quietly. She had her hand covering her mouth, to try to cover it up, but you could just tell that she was amused by this whole situation. Her eyes told all of her secrets and you could read her like a book normally. “Okay, fine. I know it’s weird to be practicing with me, especially with Lizzy here. I forgot to introduce you guys to each other. Lizzy this is Nate, Nate, this is Lizzy, all better now?” She asked us. I nodded, thankful that I finally knew the weird girl’s name. “Amber. Where should I take her?” I asked her. “Hmm. You’ve got to make it original.” She stated. “How about you bring her to the willow tree? My parents have some good and bad memories there, why don’t you create your own? At night it will be so romantic. Tell her some cheesy pick up line, and then move in. If she backs up, kiss her simply on the forehead. If she doesn’t move, then you can make a move.” She explained to me. How does she know all of this? “Hey Amber, how do you know this stuff so well?” I asked her. “I’m a girl. It’s what I would want to happen to me. Simple.” She responded. “Thanks a ton for everything. I hope this goes well.” I told her. “How about we all watch some movies until you’ve got to leave?” Amber asked her friend and I. “Sounds good,” I answered. Lizzy, her friend, nodded in agreement. “I’ll get the popcorn,” I said smiling as I walked into the kitchen feeling much better about tonight.
