I’m not sure when it was that I felt the most magnificent, really. Was it when I scored the winning basket? Was it when the buzzer went off signifying the end of the match? Was it when the trophy was handed to m-

Oh, hell, what’s the point in lying? It was having Jamie back in my arms.

“God, I’ve missed you,” I told her firmly, as everyone was shrieking about us winning the tournament.

“I’ve missed you, too,” she sighed, pulling me in for another hug. “You have no idea, Logan.”

She winced slightly, and I pulled away abruptly. “Your back isn’t still hurting, is it?”

“No,” she said hastily.

“Jamie,” I groaned. “What is the point in you lying? You’re a terrible liar.”

“I’m a good liar!” she said, and then realised what she’d practically admitted to. “Okay, fine. It twinges a bit.”

“Maybe you should see the doctor,” I told her.

“Oh, like you’re going to see a doctor for the bruise?” she asked, eyeing my face.

I coughed slightly. “Yeah, about that…don’t worry about it.”

“Don’t worry about it?” Jamie asked me incredulously. “You got punched in the face!”

“No I didn’t!” I lied.

“Hey, you,” Tom said, slinging an arm around my shoulder.

“I won,” I said, momentarily forgetting my punching-in-the-face argument with Jamie.

“Pity vote,” Tom snorted. “We let you win; it’s repayment for that lot punching you in the face before.”

Jamie raised her eyebrows at me.

“Thanks, Tom,” I sighed. “Thanks a bunch.”

Tom realised his mistake. “I’ll, err, leave you too alone. Nice meeting you, pretty lady.”

Jamie rolled her eyes. “You too, loser.”

Tom grinned as he walked away, and I sighed. “It wasn’t bad, Jamie. Honestly.”

“It’s fine,” Jamie said dismissively. “I just left Jenna to clear up the mess.”

“What?” I asked sharply. “Jamie, what mess?”

Jamie shrugged. “Those cheerleaders that kicked your face in.”

“Jamie!” I scolded. “It wasn’t even them; it was the other members of the Aces! And I did not die, if you recall!”

“They hurt you!” Jamie said loudly, attracting too much attention for her own good. “Therefore, I hurt them. Got it?”

“Jamie, you can’t just go around punching people!” I groaned, putting my head in my hands. This was so typical Jamie; so decisive but always about the wrong things. She’d probably beaten them beyond repair, knowing her annoyingly good swimming muscles.

“Hey, now,” Coby said, making his way onto the court. “Stop with the fighting; what’s happening? Great game, Logan.”

“Thanks, brother mine,” I laughed as he picked me up and swung me around.

“LOH!” an excited voice shouted. “JAY!”

Seth, bless him, made his way through the crowd to us, with Susie in close following. He spotted me and launched his tiny body at me, so I could pick him up.

“Ow!” I said, pretending he was heavy. “Have you grown?!”

“Yes!” Seth laughed in delight.
