I sat up in the hammock; Mason continued to lie beside me, enjoying the warm sun on his stomach as it soaked into his toned abdomen, but he opened his eyes.

“What are you doing? I was enjoying spooning you.”

I turned around to look at him. “I’m sorry to wake you up. I just wanted to watch…”

“Watch what?”

“Everything.”

He half smiled at me, his eyes still dull. It was already happening, I could tell. They all knew I was lying to them and now, they just didn’t seem the same. It was like they were all putting on a happy façade, smiling to make me happy. But I could always tell they were unhappy. It was in their eyes. They always said the eyes were the window to someone’s soul.

“Jamie!”

I turned around, swallowing the lump in my throat. “Yeah?”

“Do you want to come in?”

I hesitated. “I don’t know, Jenna…” she was on about the swimming pool. Seen so the weather was nice, and I was out of hospital, my mother thought it would be a good time to invite everyone over to swim. I don’t know whether it was because she wanted to show everyone that she was composed, and alright, or whether she just wanted to have my friends around me.

“Hello? Earth to Mars!” Logan shouted, splashing me with some water. I realised I was staring into space, and frowned as I looked at her.

“What?”

“I’m sure just some light swimming wouldn’t hurt you…”

I coughed. “If you hadn’t noticed, I’ve been out of—” I cut myself off. I wasn’t even going to mention my back and the hospital. It seemed a taboo subject right now. They all knew I was lying. I knew they knew I was lying, but I was doing it to protect them.

Suddenly, as if she’d only been in the conservatory, Noah walked out with a tray of lemonade, placed it on the outside table, and then sat down on one of the sunbeds. She lifted her sunglasses. “Lemonade everyone...”

“Thanks!” Jenna replied, swimming to the edge of the pool. She lifted herself out before rushing to get some lemonade.

“Pass one to me.”

“Please…?” Jenna prompted.

Logan rolled her eyes, and swam towards the edge of the pool closed to Jenna. “Please?” she asked flatly.

“That’s better.” The other girl replied, passing down a drink.

“What are you, my mother?”

“No,” Jenna replied, giggling. “I’m your girlfriend.”

“Oh that’s right,” Logan smirked, sipping some lemonade. “How could I forget?”

Jenna narrowed her eyes and stuck her foot in the water. She splashed Logan, who opened her mouth in shock. Water flooded in and my best-friend spluttered, holding onto the edge for support. When she recovered, both of them laughed. I smiled solemnly at the pair, wishing my life was as carefree right now.

Mason’s large, warm arms cradled me, and I jumped. His breath hit my neck and his warmth surrounded me. “What’s wrong?” he whispered. “Did you want to go in the water?”

“I can’t,” I replied, in a tone similar to his own.

“Sure you can.”

He sighed, and moved his head. His forehead was on my back now – my bare back – and I shivered as thoughts about how he could see my ugly bruises raced through my mind. He waited there for a moment before kissing my skin gently. He then pushed himself up a bit, leaned down, and grabbed his t-shirt.
