“How are you feeling today, Jamie?”
I sighed as my eyes opened, blinking at the sudden polar change from the darkness to pure white. I sat myself up in the bed, scowling as I knocked my IV that was sticking in my hand.
“Fine.” I snapped. “I just want to hurry up and get out of here!”
The doctor’s lips twitched. “I’m afraid that can’t happen, quite yet. You’re in need of medical attention and maybe assistance for a while.”
“Why?” I asked, slightly alarmed. Every other time I would come to the hospital, although this wasn’t my regular one, I would only have to stay for a while. I wouldn’t have to stay overnight, let alone a ‘while’, why would I need assistance? I understood needing attention, patients like me always did whenever they were admitted to hospital but I never needed assistance before.
“Does your doctor know about your back injury?”
“Yes.”
“Right, well I’m afraid we have something to discuss.”
“What?”
“Are you aware you had a seizure last night?”
“No,” I replied. I remembered being in the club dancing with Mason, and then I remembered watching Logan and Jenna fall out. After that, I woke up in the hospital at about three o’clock this morning and a nurse had to calm me down.
“The paramedics reached you in that state, when you were brought in we had to collect all the files on you that we could. In your files, it is in fact mentioned that you did actually hurt your back.”
“I know.” I interjected. What was the point in asking if my doctor knew I hurt my back if it was in my medical files?
“Well when you had your seizure it locked the muscles in your back. You’ll find that this, along with your medication, is a disadvantage for you.”
“Disadvantage, how?”
“I’m afraid, after we let you go, you won’t be able to play any contact sport for three weeks. You’ll have to be in a wheelchair for that period of time. The pain you’d suffer would increase if we decided to let you carry on as you are. Jamie,” the doctor sighed, “I don’t think you realise what you’re up against. This isn’t a cold, this is serious.”
Throughout the doctors speech a lump had been formed at the back of my throat, and I swallowed, trying my hardest not to cry in-front of a complete stranger. Although he was a stranger that knew more than my friends right now, I didn’t want to hear his advice. There was nothing he could do – in the long run. He wasn’t going to be there helping me through the rest of the situation. He was just here; at a hospital closest to where I fell. Nothing more, nothing less.
“Jamie? Miss. Mars, are you listening to me?”
I coughed, clearing my throat so it wouldn’t break. I didn’t want this man’s pity, so I wasn’t going to cry. I closed my eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath.
“Jamie I’m only trying to—”
“Help me,” I interrupted, opening my eyes. “I know. And I appreciate that, I heard what you said.”
“Right,” the doctor said again, wiping his brow. He proceeded to awkwardly tell me about my condition, and explained why I had a seizure and what I could do to help it. “We have agreed with your doctor that you may have one of our wheelchairs, he will return it to us. You don’t have to worry.”
“At least that’s one less thing to worry about, right?” I replied, laughing half-heartedly. I soon stopped pathetically laughing and gave up; turning my attention to the blanket I was wrapped up in, fiddling with the seams with my hands.
