“Vitamins, Jamie.”
I opened my eyes. My boyfriend was kneeling down by the side of my bed, a glass of Orange juice and my vitamins in hand. “No.” I replied, before closing my eyes again.
Mason sighed. “Jamie…”
I repeated his actions, opening my eyes again. “Mason…”
“Please take your tablets?” he urged. “You’re mother told me that under no circumstances was you not to take them, so please… for me?”
I sat up in my bed, the heaven that I didn’t want to get out of today. It had been nearly two weeks since I competed in the tournament and today my compassionate leave ended. I had to go back to college. Logan wasn’t due back for another few days and I really felt like going and spending time with her, ignoring my education completely. I didn’t want to go back.
In the end, after looking at his face, I sighed. “Fine.”
“Thank you.”
“Only because I like your face the way it is.”
Mason frowned like a lost child, as if just immediately being told that the tooth fairy was broke. “Ouch.”
“Time for school.”
“Already?”
“I know how you feel.”
“You haven’t been back yet,” Mason pointed out.
“No,” I replied, that was true, “but it’s going to pain me. I won’t be able to do sports, I’ll find it hard to command the cheerleaders and I won’t be able to beat my record in the pool. I try to beat my previous record every week, you know.”
“I know.” He smirked.
I rolled the covers away from my body, swinging my legs around. “Plus, you don’t have to be in a wheelchair.” I said. Mason, as if it were perfect timing, moved forwards, holding his arms out to pick me up. “I can walk, Mason. I don’t need assistance all the time.”
“I’m just helping,” he said quietly. “Your wheelchair is downstairs.”
I grabbed his hand, giving it a grateful squeeze. My wheelchair was left downstairs last night because Mason had carried me to my room. “I can still walk. I’ve just been advised to not walk so much. It’s more the make sure I don’t do any exercise.”
He chuckled. “I’ll like to see the day when you can’t use the auditorium or the swimming pool.”
“Stick with me all day then.” I replied glumly, before dragging him down the stairs.
The kitchen was hectic. Everyone was having a family breakfast. We’d been having them a lot more ever since I’d gotten ill. It was my mom’s idea; I suspected that it was something she thought up to keep us together; to give us time together before there was no time left.
Mason sat down in a seat and I went to grab some bowls, cereal and two glasses. Juices were already on the table. Wesley, the only other missing member, trudged down and sat on Mason’s right. He looked tired. He’d probably been sleeping all of yesterday, because he was up last night. I could hear the television from my room most of the night – even if it was on silent.
I took a seat.
“Did you take your vitamins, Jamie?” my mother asked, buttering some toast.
“Yes.”
“Good. Well done, Mason.”
“Thanks,” he responded to my mother before pouring himself a glass of water.
“James, pass me the orange juice.” Wesley commanded, glancing at me over Mason.
