Ella is obscenely nervous as she enters the restaurant. It's the first time she's met them and it will be a first impression she'll never have a chance to do over.

She steps in perfectly on time. She lifts her chin high. She straightens her posture. Now that she's battle ready she strides over to the centre table James' family are seated around.

Smiling widely she greets his parents with kisses on each cheek and a light hug. She then slides in next to James placing a quick kiss on his cheek.

"You look gorgeous." James murmurs to her. It was meant to be a quiet voice but Ella is pretty sure his mum overheard given by her smirk.

His parents are polite and cordial. It's a pleasant meal. However, Ella can't help but think that these two people hardly know James at all. They speak as if they are clutching at known facts about their son. They know the classes he's enrolled in and the sports he plays, but do they know his favourite book or the way he looks when he's truly happy? She doubts they could even say what brand of toothpaste he uses... let alone any personal information about their son.

So, Ella leaves the dinner feeling slightly sorry for James.

She pities the boy.
