The next morning I went to school with Veronica. As we walked in I got a lot of stares. People were whispering things and looking back at me.
"What's goin' on?" Asks Veronica obviously as confused as I am.
"I don't know." At least I didn't until Holly came walking down the hallway.
"Is somethin' wrong Julia? You seem awfully confused." She smirked then walked off as if nothing had happened.
"Wha' was that all about?"
"Well, yesterday Holly said she was going to try and steal George from me. So now I guess she's done something to make George hers."
She nodded and we walked to our lockers. Paul walked up to as I got my books. "Paul! You scared me."
"Sorry. Um Julia. People have been staring and talking 'bout me. Does me 'air look okay?"
I laughed. "No your hair is fine. But people have been doing' the same to me."
"Yer sure it's not the 'air?" I laughed and playfully punched his arm. "You and your hair. Well I've got to get to class. See you later." I rushed to class and just beat the bell.
I even got a whole bunch of stares when I walked in. Did I do something?
~**~
Even at lunch George seemed to act a bit weird. He seemed to not want to be around me, which hurt.
Every once in a while he would glare at Paul. Something was going on and I wanted to know what.
I was going to ask him but the bell rang and I had to get to my next class.
~**~
"Julia!" I heard someone call my name. George walked up to me. "I need to talk to you." He seemed really urgent.
"Well, what is it?"
"I've been hearing rumors from everyone that you were cheating on me with Paul. Is this true?"
It all makes sense now. Holly was telling everyone I'm cheating. George would hear this and breakup with me. How did I seriously not see this before?
"No of course not! I would never do tha' to ye. Paul and I are just friends." I gave him a hug. "Are ye sure?" He asked hugging me tighter.
"Yes. I am. Do you believe them or me?"
"You of course."
I kissed him. "I love you. Just remember that." He smiled. "I love ye too. But promise me that you'll never do that to me?"
"I promise." I kissed him again.
"Good. I noticed yer startin' to get yer accent." I blushed.
"Yeah. I noticed yesterday." He smiled and took my hand.
We walked to the park. On the way there we still got a few weird looks from some people but I didn't mind anymore.
I got on the swings and he pushed me for a bit. I sat under a tree and George sat next to me. I rested my head on his shoulder and he pit his arm around me.
We sat there for a few moments. It got a little cold since it was nearing October. George noticed. He took off his jacket and put it around me. I rested my head on his shoulder again and slowly fell asleep.
~**~
"Julia. Julia."
I woke up from George slightly shaking my shoulder. "Did I fall a
seep?," I asked yawning. He nodded and helped me up.
"What time is it?" He looked at the sun. "I'd say about 4, 4:30." My heart skipped a beat. "I'm gonna be late for work!" I quickly kissed his cheek. "See ye later" I said as I ran to my house.
I got my uniform and burst out the door. I'm supposed to be there in 15 minutes. I think I'll make it if I run. I made sure I was going the right way before I turned the corner. I found myself on Penny Lane and walked right in.
"Hello Mr. Nielson," I said as I tied the back of my apron.
"Hello Julia. Yer right on time. Why don't you start by taking that mans order." He pointed to a man who looks like he knew what he wanted. I nodded and took out my pen and pad.
"Hi there. May I take your order?"
I repeated this several times with several different customers. It actually wasn't as boring as I thought. I talked to a few of the costumers and learned more about the stores around here. I even earned a few good tips from most of the costumers. I think I'll like working here.
When I was finished at the end of the day, I took off my apron, placed it on the hook and left.
I went home and sat on the couch. "Julia is that you?" Said a voice from upstairs. "Yes mom. It's me."
"I made you a sandwich. It's sitting on plate in the kitchen."
I got up and went to the counter the sandwich was on. "Thanks," I called back.
I finished and thought I would go see Veronica. I walked to her house, following the directions she gave me at school. I rung the doorbell. No reply. I waited a bit more but soon decided that I would see if George was available.
As I was coming up to George's house I saw something. Something that broke my heart in two.
