It was the day after Paul had asked me to be his girlfriend. I woke up with a smile on my face. I couldn't wait to see Paul today.
"What made you so happy today?" asked mom.
"Oh, you know," I said.
"Well, no I don't, but you can tell me after school which your going to be late for."
I glanced at the clock. I was already 10 minutes late. "Crap." I grabbed all my stuff and put it in my backpack. I was hopping down the porch as I was trying to put on my sneaker.
I was running as fast as I can. My feet were numb with cold and I could see my breath.
I ran down the halls and stopped at my class. I walked in casually so it looked like I was being late on purpose. That obviously wasn't the case.
"Ms. Burk," Mrs. Jones said coldly, "You're late. Have a seat and you'll be serving detention after school for your tardiness."
"Yes, ma'am," I say dully. This is just great. I'm going to be late for work today and then I'll have to deal with my mother afterwards.
Kaithlyn nudged my elbow. "Why were ye late?"
"Long story. Actually, not long at all I-"
"Ms. Burk, you already have an hour of detention, would you like me to add another for disrupting the class?"
"No, ma'am."
"Then I suggest you stay quiet or you and Ms. Vanderbelt will see me after class." That shut us up.
Mrs. Jones went on with the lesson. No body really seemed to be paying attention. Everyone looked back at us once in a while, though.
The bell rang and I couldn't be happier to leave the class.

"So when were ye planning on telling me!" squealed Kaithlyn.
"Shh," I whispered since we were in the middle of class, "Tell you what?"
"Ye know, that Paul and ye were officially together!" She looked like she was a clown with a smile that big. She's more excited about this than I am.
"It's no big deal, really," I lied, it was actually a big deal to me. "Anyways, how did you find out?"
"I heard from a friend who knows a girl who has a friend whose brother was at the park when Paul asked ye!" She gasped for air as she finished her sentence.
News does get around doesn't it? I just sat surprised that if she knows, of all people, then probably everyone in the school knows.
"But why does everyone care enough to tell other people?"
"Well, I mean Paul is one of the most popular kids because he's friends with John," I found this a little offensive but I just brushed it off. "So, people obsess over the popular kids and always know what's going on with them."
"Okay then," I say. Funny how some people know more about me than I do. "So is that good or bad?"
"It depends on what they say about ye. If they like ye that's good but if they hate ye then ye know."
"Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence," I say in sarcastic tone.
"No problem," she said obviously not detecting the sarcasm. She goes to work on her worksheet. She takes one look at the next problem and turns back to me. "What's number five?"
I laugh and roll my eyes. Typical Kaithlyn.

My sight went black. My eyes were being covered by someone's hands. Veronica stopped talking and I could hear her giggling.
