Today's exams
seem to be
no better
than yesterday's.
My concentration is
lacking,
to say the least;
I can't stop my mind
from wandering on
to the topic of
Stacey and my mother -
I refuse to call her
my mother's girlfriend
at this juncture -
or to Matty's
depressed mood
earlier this morning.Worries about
both subjects
follow me on through
my final two exams,
and then again
as I sit in the cafeteria
to wait for Matty herself.
Somehow, I can't
bring myself to care
about what grades
I may or may not
have scored today.
It's like this worry,
constantly hovering overhead
like an obnoxious
grey raincloud,
just can't seem
to leave me alone,
not even for
a second.Matty soon appears,
looking just as
tired and moody
as she had earlier -
but there's a hint
of triumph
in her careworn expression.
"We're done,"
she sighs as she
plops down on the chair
beside me.
"The tests are over...
Merry Christmas,
Cam.""It's not quite
Christmas yet,"
I remind her,
eliciting the
smallest of grins
as she pushes herself up
out of her seat,
pulling me
along with her."C'mon,"
she says.
"Let's get
out of here."The snow has
abated some
by the time we
get outside,
but has it still
has managed
to leave its mark
on the world around us.
Everything is
a blanket of white,
unblemished and pure
except for where
cars have driven
and pedestrians have
trampled it down.Further ahead,
Matty bends down
to peer at a long icicle
that had grown on
one of the benches
near the street.
I stop
just behind her,
beside a particularly large
bank of snow.
An idea
suddenly forms -
and for once,
I don't bother
to think
before I act."H-hey!"
she yells as
my snowball hits her
in the back,
knocking her forward
a step or two.
I'm almost afraid
that I've accidentally
hurt her,
but that worry vanishes
as she spins around,
a gleam in her eye as she
reaches for the nearest powder
to pelt my way.It's war
from there.
The few other students
leaving so early
in the day
watch from afar as
Matty and I
exchange a barrage
of snowy projectiles,
occasionally landing
a hit
that is accompanied
by a chorus of screeches
on her part
and muted swears
on mine.
It's not long
before we
tire ourselves out
and fall to the ground
breathing heavily,
white smoke against
a white backdrop.It's a nice kind
of exhaustion, though,
mixed with relief
that the day is over
and happiness
over being together.
I glance over
at Matty,
and we both just smile
in sync.
I'm more than sure
that the same
exhilaration
and joy
is running through
both our veins
at this moment.Inexplicably,
in this one moment,
we are completely
and inseparably
linked together.×
Alright, I had to split this thing in half because it got wayyyyy too long, so this is kind of a cliffhanger? I dunno. There's more to come... And that more to come will be the last chapter (excluding the epilogue), and will begin to answer a few very important questions that desperately need answered. I wrote it last night and just kind of flipped out the whole time (with my family in the other room...), so y'know, that's cool.
But for now, have these dumb nerds being cute (and Cam being a bad child and swearing - I told you guys that I had a headcanon for that) because I'm pretty sure we all deserve that after all the angst before this.
If you guys liked this chapter, I would love if you would vote and leave me some feedback! It would be very much appreciated! c:
