"It's okay." He whispered seeing my unresponsiveness. He backed away and reentered the room he came out of. I dazedly sat down on one of the sofas in the living room and saw that today's paper was on the glass table. I bent to grab it. I gasped when I saw the headline.
'Man, 25, found severely injured in alley. The Busan Killer strikes again?'
I read the article, and it described exactly Minjun and the location that we were at yesterday. Even though it didn't give any names, I knew it was definitely about Minjun. I sighed in relief now knowing that he wasn't killed, just badly injured. But a small part of me was disappointed that he wasn't gone once and for all from my life.
I was startled when Jimin coughed. I quickly put down the paper and saw that he was holding a giant macaron on a plate. His eyes traveled to the paper I was reading and he chuckled, "What do you think?"
"About what?"
"What are you thinking now that you have read that." He asked as he casually sat down next to me on the sofa, draping an arm over the sofa back.
"...Are you THE Busan Killer?" I asked.
"Yes, I am. Now eat, Yerin." He put the macaron in front of me and handed me a dessert fork.
"Why are you so honest to me?" I asked as I got ahold of the plate.
"I see no need in lying to you." He leaned back into the sofa.
I started eating the macaron. It was surprisingly good, "Thanks for this..."
After a while of silence where I was eating and he was just staring at me, I asked, "Why are doing this? Why did you bring me here? And... why did you help me?"
"I have been observing you for quite a while now." He said, "You seem fine with life on the surface, but I could tell otherwise. I bet none of your friends know that you actually hate your life."
I was rendered speechless by how accurate what he said was. Yes, I did indeed hate my life. I took up four jobs in order to support myself and my father. I had close to no free time. But whenever my father is home, which he rarely is, he would always be drunk and take his anger out on me. Minjun was the first guy that actually showed something close to sympathy, which was why I fell for him. But obviously, that was a bad idea.
"I understand you," Jimin continued, "I know what it feels like to be in that position, where you feel hopeless, and have nothing to live for. I want to help you out of that pointless life."
Suddenly I could hear my phone ringing from somewhere in the apartment. I looked at him and he gave me the 'go for it' look, "Put it on speaker."
I followed the sound back into the bedroom, and found my phone on top of all my clothes. I quickly grabbed it and pressed the speaker button.
"Hello?" I said.
"Yerin? Where are you? Are you okay?" My friend, Yunji's voice came through the phone.
"Yes, Yunji, I'm fine."
"Have you seen the news? Oh wait you must have. Are you okay? I know you must be devastated for this to happen to your boyfriend! I'm sure he'll be fine since he is in the best hospital in Busan right now."
"Is he? I'm glad..." I forced myself to say.
"You really don't sound okay. Hey, why don't we meet up right now, old place?"
"Umm..." I turned around and saw that Jimin has been listening. He nodded. "Yea sure, Yunji, let's meet up."
"Cool! I'll see you there at 2?"
"Yea, see you." I said, and the phone call ended.
"Just leave the nightgown on the bed when you go." He said.
"Was it you that changed me into this?" I asked.
"Who else?"
"Did you..."
"No, I didn't do anything else to you."
I sighed in relief. He went out and closed the door to give me privacy to change.
When I finished changing I went outside and saw that he was sitting on the sofa, reading the paper I was reading.
"The door is unlocked." He said.
"Are you just letting me go like this? Aren't you scared that I'll go and tell everyone about you being the most wanted killer in Korea right now?" I asked, suspicious.
"I just know you won't tell." He didn't even spare me a glance, "And this will not be the last time we see each other."
I turned the door knob and as Jimin said, it was unlocked. I quickly went outside as if I was afraid that if I stayed in there one more second, he might change his mind and not let me leave.
