What she just said sounded so ridiculous that my head could not even process it enough to formulate a response. I heard correctly, right? I looked over to Yoongi, and if he was surprised by my mother's action, he wasn't showing it.
"What?" I said with furrowed brows, "You can't just...join FIRE."
"I know this sound ridiculous," my mother said, the smile never leaving her face. "But please here me out."
"Go on." Yoongi said.
"I know you have my son Hoseok," she said looking at Yoongi. "I don't know what bad things he's done, but he is my son afterall. So please, let me join you and retribute for whatever he's done."
Yoongi huffed, "Retribute? How?"
"I still don't really know how gangs work, but I am willing to do any thing."
"How can you not know how gangs work?" I asked. "You were married to a top dog of Bludhood."
"I was, but I still wasn't told much about the internal affairs of the gang. I was more like...a trophy wife."
"You say you would do anything, huh?" Yoongi asked.
My mum nodded.
"Then, if I told you to go into prostitution, would you?"
I gasped, "Yoongi no!"
"Just answer me." He said to my mum.
My mum looked down in contemplation. "I mean...if that's what will prevent him from being punished, then yea..."
"Mum, that's a no too," I said. "Hoseok is not getting away without punishment."
She looked at me with furrowed brows. "Yerin, he is your brother by blood. Please don't be so heartless."
I scoffed, "You are calling me heartless? He was the one that almost killed my boyfriend, and he didn't care how I would feel."
"But Hoseok is family, your boyfriend is not."
I shook my head in disbelieve. "Mum..."
"I don't have time to be talking about emotion and family right now," Yoongi said looking at his Rolex, which I noticed was the one that Eunjung bought for him. "I need to get back to work."
He stood up adjusting his blazer. "Miss Jung, I will take your proposition into consideration." He then left us two in the room.
I turned look at here for a moment before speaking, "You do have a place to stay, right?"
"Aha...no. I haven't thought that far yet."
I sighed. "There is a hotel nearby. Just go there. I'm sure Yoongi will somehow contact you soon."
"Yerin, dear, what happened the two years I wasn't here?" She asked, a troubled look on her face.
"I thought you weren't interested," I replied.
"I- I... It was only because I was marrying a gangster. I didn't want to drag you into it, so I didn't contact you. But you somehow fell into that world as well, and you are obviously doing a lot better than me." She glanced at the door where Yoongi left through. "How did you even befriend the leader of FIRE?"
"It's a long story..." I said, remembering that night, when everything began.
"And who is that boyfriend of yours? Is he in FIRE?"
I nodded. At that moment, Jimin happened to walked in.
"Yerin, here you are." He entered into the room, stopping when he saw my mother.
I stood up and went to his side. "Jimin, this is my mother. And mum, this is my boyfriend."
My mum and Jimin just awkwardly stared at each other, neither of them saying anything. This was definitely not how the normal 'introducing boyfriend to parent' would go.
"So how did you meet my daughter?" My mother finally said after a few seconds.
Jimin gave me a look, as if asking if he should tell her the truth.
I couldn't tell my mother Jimin stalked me and we met when my ex tried to kill me one night, and how Jimin almost killed him. "We met on a night out." I said.
"A night out is it? And... how long have you two been together? Last time I checked, weren't you going out with this nice boy called Minjun? What happened to him?"
Hearing that name again made me want to throw up. A 'nice boy'? He was anything but that."
"Mum, have you not seen the news?" I asked.
She thought for a bit then gasped, "Oh right, of course! He was attacked by the Busan Killer and he disappeared after coming out of hospital."
"Yea, good thing the Busan Killer is in jail now," I said, perfectly aware who was standing right next to me.
My mum nodded slowly. "And you two moved in together right? How did that happen?"
Yea no, I couldn't tell her Jimin half-cooed half-kidnapped me to his apartment. "It was a mutual decision." I answered.
"And... you know... are you two... 'protected'?"
"Mum!" I scolded her for the intrusive question. "Why are you interviewing me anyway?"
"Sorry sorry, I just want to know who's hand my daughter is in." She laughed awkwardly.
I sighed, "Mum, just go to the hotel."
-----
I arrived back at the apartment building after work that day with Jimin. We chatted about work as we went up the floors. I got out my keys and unlocked the door, only to notice something when I opened it.
Strangely, there was a small piece of paper on the floor, which definitely was not there when we left the apartment this morning. I bent down to pick it up with an ominous feeling.
It wrote, in simple black ink:
'I know Nam Seoyun is not the Busan Killer.'
Jimin's and my eyes met, both conveying the same emotion.
