"So you only knew she's alive?" you murmur as the back ramp of the starship starts to open. "You didn't know where she was?"

The heat hits you immediately- the cool air inside of the ship is quickly replaced with an air that is simultaneously humid and dry. You don't like it one bit; it makes your already stinging throat feel dryer, and you feel your body start to heat up.

You find yourself longing for the cool air inside of the Finalizer.

"Yes. I found out she was transferred to Jakku just this past week."

"Transferred?"

The question seemingly falls on deaf ears, because Kylo ignores it. It angers you a little bit, because you know he heard you.

He stomps down the ramp, his black robe fluttering behind him, like a shadow, as the hot air hits his body. He squints as his eyes slowly adjust to the blinding brightness. You shield your eyes with your hand, you're not used to it being this bright, or this hot. You're not used to being in direct sunlight.

Kylo sighs, shielding his eyes as well, standing at the bottom of the metal ramp. He turns to the stormtroopers who were piloting the space craft, and extends his arm. "You can rest now."

You feel their energy levels drop, and watch them as their heads loll against their shoulders, their breathing slowing down.

Gingerly walking up behind Kylo, you grab his arm, and feel him tense up ever so slightly under your touch. "I'm nervous," you mumble.

"Reasonably so," he says, keeping his eyes on the outstretched desert in front of you. He turns his head to the right, calculating the distance between the airship and the only huts visible.

He can feel a heartbeat and an aura similar to yours- the woman isn't force-sensitive like you. But he can tell you both share the same blood, the same family line. He knows it's your family.

"I can sense your mother's presence."

"Take me to her," you say steadily, letting go of his arm and stepping onto the coarse sand, your feet firmly planted. "I need to know her." You speak without missing a beat; nervousness doesn't mean anything to you if it means finally getting to look into the eyes of your mother.

*

Walking in the humid air is tiring, and hadn't it been for your extensive training, you both would have been lying half-dead on the burning sand.

The sun's rays are scorching, but you walk fast, with Kylo at your heels. You can feel his nervous aura, pulsating.

"It feels.. Strange, being on a new planet without my mask on."

You stop walking for a second and turn to face him, wiping the little beads of sweat which are forming on your forehead. "Kylo Ren doesn't exist anymore. It's you, Ben. You don't need a mask. You don't even need that," you add, pointing to the lightsaber's hilt attached to his belt.

"If something happens, I need to protect you," he says quietly, his lips forming a small smile.

You close the distance between you two and pull him into a quick kiss, both of your cracked lips hungrily searching for each other.

"After we find my mother," you say, placing your palms on his muscled chest, "we find Leia. We find Luke. And then-"

"Then, we work on us," he grins, finger combing his hair.

"Huh," you laugh as you both start walking again.

"What?"

"Kylo Ren would have said something cynical. Like how we're on Snoke's target-list. And how we're probably not going to make it that far."

Something sinister churns in his stomach- but only for a quarter of a second before he seizes control. He disguises his dread with optimism and a wide smile. "You're talking to Ben."

You nudge him with your elbow, and he drapes his arm awkwardly around your shoulder.

The huts look like they're forming a makeshift city square. There's a circle of wooden and metal huts, with a huge watering hole in the middle, and a junkyard on the outskirts of said square.

You nibble your lip as you watch Kylo close his eyes, focusing on the familiar aura of your mother. It leaves you confused, the fact that he can sense her and you cannot.

"In that one," he says loudly, pointing to a small hut, with the wooden door half-open.

No sooner had he uttered the words than you start walking towards it, breaking out into a run. You hesitate as you reach the hut, wondering whether you should knock or not.

You decide on knocking, and do so. As you're waiting for someone to come to the door, you feel your heart racing, almost as if it too wants to exit your chest to catch a glimpse at the woman who lives here. You can feel Kylo standing awkwardly behind you, waiting.

The door creaks open slightly, and someone peers at you from the small gap. "Who is it?"

The voice is sweet; shadowed and coarsened by fear. It hits you like a wave of nostalgia; this is the same voice who used to sing you lullabies about the stars so many years ago. You are sure of it. Only now do these memories surface, crashing around you like a building falling to the ground.

You stand there seemingly paralysed, unable to speak, or move, so Kylo takes a step forward, placing his hands on your shoulders. "We're looking for a woman called Lillian, we believe this girl is her daughter?"

The woman behind the door hesitates, feels her mouth dry up. She then gathers up the strength to find some courage and opens the door all the way. How could this person be her one and only child? How could this young woman be her baby Vega, taken away a decade and a half ago?

You take in the woman standing in front of you, the sunlight illuminating her hardened face. You mumble out an inaudible "Yes."

This is your mother, and unmistakably so. She shares the same green eyes, she has the same hair type. The worry lines on her face betray her young age, surely, she can't be older than her mid-thirties.

She takes your features in, her eyes travelling from your bright green eyes, to your plump lips and then to your high cheek-bones, to your athletic build. It's like looking at a younger version of herself.

"My baby Vega," she says suddenly, grabbing you in her arms and hugging you tightly to her chest. You clasp her to your torso, feeling her heart beat as crazy as yours is.

She grabs your face in both her hands and smothers you in kisses, tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks. She wipes away your tears as well, whispering, "Don't cry baby, Momma's here.."

"I thought you were dead," you croak, your voice breaking as the lump in your throat slowly starts to diminish.

"I thought you were something worse," she says, wiping a final tear away. "I thought they had turned you into a killing machine.. Oh, my little daughter. I'm so happy to see your eyes haven't seen any murders." She smiles at you, blinking rapidly, trying to keep herself from crying again.

You hold onto her hand, hold it tightly to your chest. Nothing else in this entire universe matters at the moment. The galaxy could implode and you wouldn't care. You had found your mother. After all these years.

Nothing, and no-one could take away the rush of joy filling your body from head to toe. Nothing.
