Chapter 12

Cale

This isn't how it's supposed to go. I think to myself. Why is it everything I do just makes life more complicated, I think as I run across the road. I shudder as I walk to wards the grave yard, knowing that no matter how hard I try, they aren't coming back. Maybe Mele isn't either, maybe it's all my fault.

"No!" I tell myself, "it's not your fault, you didn't know how she was going to rea....." my voice trailed off as I saw a crumpled heap lying on the ground......directly outside the grave yard.

"Mele?!" I shout. The body shuffles a little.

"Damn it" I say. As I rush over to her, "Mele, what is wrong with you! What are you doing here! Don't you know the risks of just lying here by yourself?" I sigh at the end. "Come on, let's get you home"

I bend to pick her up, but then I realise that's not her.

My brow furrow's, the Mele I know might have a few upset times but none like what I'm seeing right now.

"Mele...whats going on?" I say a little unsteady as her body slowly picks her self up.

"Why Cale!" She says in a voice with so much sadness it should only be in hell.

"Whatttt do do you mean?" I stutter at her.

"Why can't I remember them?"

She says with a sad laugh, "am I stupid?"

"No Mele"

"Am I deaf?"

"No..." I say a bit unsure after all she could be a lip reader.

"Do I look naive to you? Am I naive?"

"No Mele... your many things just not naive"

I see her body shake In anger.

"Then WHY can't I remember my own FAMILY!"

She says with a anger I've never seen before.

"Mele....who are your family?"

She's silent but gently takes my hand and drags me towards the grave yard.

When we finally stop I see a grave in front of me, it says

Nara starling

And the next says

Dae starling

And lastly

Jid'e starling

Before I can say anything Mele says

"This....is my family."

I swallow, trying to find the right words to say but just settle for this.

"So"

She looks at me weirdly but then takes a huge breath and closes her eyes.

Now who's the weird one, "What happens to them, what does it mean, lost at sea?"

"They were fishing, out for the day, but something happened"

'Yeah' I think 'obviously something happened because there dead!'

But I tried to stay cool.

"What happened?"

"There boat was found, forty kilometres from the bay" she pauses for emphasis. "upside down, no trace of them, all but one thing was left, nothing else"

"Gee I'm so sorry, how long ago was this?" I say scratching my head.

"Fours years, I was two, I don't remember a thing"

She says with a sob.

Now I know why she's so grown up, she has had to deal with al this trauma and she's only six,

"Mele, no ones blaming you for not remembering what happened, I mean who can you were two?"

"You don't get it Cale! I was that one thing, I was found sitting happily on top of the upside down boat. Not really caring about what was happening! The worst bit is, I don't remember anything"

Shocked I just stared at her. So she continued.

"After that I was considered the bad luck charm, nobody would take Selei, Tao or I in. Not even my grandma, we just lived off the street for a while, until we were found, taken to a home, and we have lived there ever since. But they still loved me and took care of me when the orphanages didn't......that's why it's so hard now they're gone"

And she then feel to the floor, sobbing for all she is worth, and trust me that's a lot.
