Let me tell you a story. Once upon a time, there was a pair of twins. Their names were Lydia and Harry Potter. Almost eleven years ago, when they were just one year old, their parents were killed in a car crash, leaving the boy with but a scar in the shape of a lightening bolt upon his forehead. The twins were dumped on the doorstep of an evil family, who hated everything about the pair. They forced them to sleep in the smallest places the family could find. The boy belonged under the stairs and the girl in a coat closet near by. It's been 11 years since that fateful crash, and it would appear as if the twins were cursed.
Okay - so, most of that is true. I'm Lydia Potter. I have a twin named Harry, who has a lightning bolt scar. Our parents did die in a car crash and we did get left on a family's doorstep. I wouldn't say they are evil, but they definitely aren't nice. And for the record, it's a broom cupboard that I sleep in. Coat closet just sounds slightly better.
I bet you want to know more about the family we live with. They're called the Dursleys. Petunia Dursley is our Aunt. Mum was her sister. Vernon Dursley is our Uncle and he's the worst of them all. Their "little" boy, Dudley - Or "Dudders", as Aunt Petunia affectionately calls him - is almost as bad. And almost as wide.
Vernon works as the director of a company called Grunnings. They make drills and . . . that's about all they do. Vernon is a very wide, very beefy man with very little neck. Aunt Petunia is as thin as a stick with blonde hair and has way too much neck. Although, that's good for her, I suppose, considering half the time she's staring over the fence, snooping on the neighbours. And then there's Dudley. He is short and fat and horrible. But if you ask his parents, there's no finer boy in any land. If you ask me, I'd say he makes me gag. The family is the total opposite of Harry and I. I don't know much about our parents, because of the crash and all, but I can't imagine they'd be as horrible as this lot. What's more, if you look in the Dursley's home, you'd have no idea that two other people live there. It's all about "Dudders" in this house.

At the time that this story begins, I'm asleep. Right now, I'm sound asleep in my broom closet. Aunt Petunia, however, is wide awake, as I can tell by her shrill voice and sharp tapping on the door. "Up! Get up!" she trills, hitting her sharp talons against the door. I wake slowly, but in time to hear yet another command to wake up and her soft footsteps walking down the hall to do the same to Harry.
After dressing, I emerge at the same time as my brother. He's still pulling on socks and has a jersey in his hand. "Morning, Bolt," I greet. He raises one hand, rubbing his eyes with the other.
"Are you two awake, yet?" our Aunts voice rings from the kitchen. She stomps into the hallway.
"Yes, we're awake," Harry replies, with a yawn.
"I see that," Aunt Petunia sucks in her cheeks with annoyance. "Lydia, I need you to make toast. Just butter, as usual. Harry, look after the bacon. Everything needs to be perfect today. It's Dudley's birthday." She pauses and looks up the stairs, allowing me to roll my eyes at Harry without been seen. "Oh, look, there's the birthday boy now!" And with that, she bustles Harry and I into the kitchen to act as common slaves.
