"Was last night fun?" My mom asked as she cooked me and Alec breakfast, I licked my lips watching the food sizzling in the pan. "Yeah it was." I said before telling her random things about the party. I gasped feeling Alec's hand against my thigh, shooting him a dirty look I pushed it away. He smirked in reply. "It was great."I looked down at my buzzing phone on the counter. Ever since last night Olivia and Jess had been flooding me with questions about me and Alec, I couldn't be bothered to answer them for the time being. What was I supposed to say? I didn't even understand what was happening myself.
"What-" my mom stopped hearing the front door swing open and smash against the wall. "Hellooooo." Lisa's voice called. We all glanced around at each other in shock. Nobody spoke as her footsteps stumbled through the house before she came into view. Her clothes were dishevelled and ripped and makeup was smudged across her face.
"Why are you here mom?" Alec demanded in an almost bored tone, as Lisa stepped into the kitchen. "This is my house!" Lisa demanded with a laugh stamping her foot on the floor almost falling over in the process.
Alec let out a fake laugh "Really? When was the last time you paid a bill?" He challenged, raising a brow at her. "Bills shmills." Lisa waved her hand making her way over to us taking a seat next to me causing my whole body to tense. I relaxed slightly when Alec placed a comforting hand against my knee.
"Lisa I think you should leave." My mom spoke calmly, turning off the oven. Picking up a pancake, Lisa gasped "Who do you think you are?" She let out a laugh of disbelief before she began chewing on her pancake. Shaking her head in disbelief, my mom looked at her best friend in sadness "The woman who's been looking after your child while you've been god knows where!" My mom snapped causing the room to fall silent, until Lisa burst out laughing.
Holding a hand to her head my mom shook her head in exasperation "Lisa you need to leave and get some help, I will help you if you want, but you can't keep disrupting our lives!" I felt Alec's body tense beside me as my mom spoke, placing my hand against his leg I turned to look at him. He gave me a small smile before turning away looking deep in thought.
I turned my attention back to Lisa as she gasped at my mom scrambling to her feet, "What?" She yelled pointing a finger at my mom. "Leave or get help." My mom told her, her voice oozing with sadness. "I don't need any help, what I need is to get away from you!" Lisa yelled before storming out of the house.
We all fell silent. My mom began dishing out breakfast as though everything was fine. She struggled to make conversation trying to fight the tension in the air, I tried to help her offering her a few words and trying to get Alec to speak but I struggled to find words.
"Are you okay?" I asked Alec who still looked deep in thought. Ever since Lisa left, half an hour before, he had barely spoke a word to anyone. He nodded absentmindedly and stood up "I'm just going to take a nap." His voice lacked emotion, he didn't even look at me as passed.
I shook my leg flicking my eyes around my room deep in thought. It had been four hours since Alec went to his room there had been no word from him, and I was beginning to get worried. Usually by now he would be back to his usual ways.
Sighing I made my way to his room, gently pushing the door open, furrowing my brows when I noticed it was empty. No Alec strumming a guitar or sleeping in his bed. Stepping into the room I looked around, and checked his bathroom seeing that was empty too. I stood in confusion, pulling out my phone to call him. No answer.
A strange feeling settled in my stomach, something is wrong. Panic filled me. Running down the stairs I yelled my moms name. "What?" She asked in confusion as she sat watching tv with a cup of tea in her hands. "Alec's gone?" I yelled. "Where?" She asked in confusion not understanding what I meant.
Running my fingers through my hair I held back the tears that threatened to fall. "Four hours ago he said he was going to have nap, and I just checked on him and he's not in his room!" I flung my arms out. Placing her cup down on the table my mom stood up and let out a sigh wrapping her arms around me. "Calm down! I'm sure he just went out to clear his head." Sliding her hand up and down my back she tried to calm my down pressing her lips against my temple. I nodded but I couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
"Did you try phoning him?" My mom asked with her phone in her hand, worry laced into her features. Nodding my head rapidly, I chewed on my thumb nail "Tons of times." Squeezing her eyes shut my mom took a deep breath "Me too." Her lips wobbled slightly, and I felt a tear slip down my cheek
"It's been 9 hours this is so unlike him." My mom groaned flinging herself onto the couch. Nodding in agreement I took a seat next to my mom, curling myself into her and resting my head on her lap. "That's what's making me think something's wrong."
Stroking her hand through my hair, she placed a kiss on top of my head and sighed "I called 911, they said we have to wait 24 hours." A groan escaped my lips and my shoulders began to shake as I fell into a sob. What if it was too late then?
Despite my exhaustion I couldn't get to sleep, my mind was working in overdrive imagining everything that could have happened to Alec causing tears to spill down my cheek. I tried to clear my mind but nothing would work. I even tried to tell myself that we were being stupid, and soon Alec was going to come home and tease us for our silliness. I listened to the sound of the cars that passed my house and the chirps of the birds as morning came.
At 7am I got out of bed, thankful that one of the worst nights of my life was over. My head pounded and my body felt drained. I looked in the mirror and gasped, my eyes were wide and puffy, dark bags beneath them, the worry lines on my forehead appeared to be permanent.
I made my way into the kitchen noticing my mom sitting at the counter sipping her coffee. Pouring myself a cup, I took a sip and sighed.
"Couldn't sleep?"
Shaking my head I took a seat next to her. "I'm so scared!" I told her as tears spilled from my eyes. Wrapping her arms around me, my mom pulled me towards her placing a kiss on my forehead. "Me too."
