Chapter 29: Twitching His Hands

We fall into a routine, Lorenzo and I. We sleep on the floor and in the morning Lorenzo walks me to the cafe. Then he does whatever it is he does while I work, then when he picks me up, we do something together or with Bayder.

Today Lorenzo picks me from the cafe like usual, but he's all fidgety and he's twisting his hands. I've never seen him this nervous. He's usually so confident in whatever he does. Maybe it's because today is the last day we have in Grantire, tomorrow we leave for Hekike. I grab his hand and intertwine our fingers.

"Whatever it is, I'm sure it'll be fine eventually," I say in a soothing voice.

He just smiles weakly at me. When we get to our spot at the beach, Lorenzo makes us sit down.

"What's up?"

"Umm, remember when you said your birthday has passed and I missed it?"

I nod, not catching on.

"Well, I was walking around the other day and I saw the perfect present for you. So happy late birthday."

He places a small bag in my hands.

"You didn't have to get me a present!"

"Just open it."

In it is a box small enough to hold a ring. I open it and see a beautiful silver eternity ring. There are two intertwined
bands with diamonds on the outside.

"Lorenzo," I breathe, "it's gorgeous."

A faint tinge of pink shows up on his cheeks and I laugh. Sliding the ring onto my left index finger, I hold it out to admire it.

"It's a perfect fit. It's perfect. Thank you so much!" I say, throwing myself at him, wrapping my arms around his neck.

He catches me and holds me close. At that moment I know I'm a goner. I love him so much and this action shows just how much he cares.

"Linnea?"

"Yeah?" I ask, untangling myself from him and sitting where I was.

"Will you be my girlfriend?"

I don't respond and he elaborates.

"I really like you and you're my best friend. I don't know when but I started seeing you more as a best friend. You're funny, smart, kind, and you're so caring. I just want to be the person you call a boyfriend and I want you to be the person I call a girlfriend. You're the best thing I've ever had."

"Yes."

...

"You promise to call?"

"Yes."

"And text?"

"Yes."

"And skype?"

"Yes."

"And send snail mail?"

"Yes."

"And email?"

"Yes."

"And-"

"Okay, she'll keep in touch with you! Can we please move on? We have a train to catch!"

It was time to leave Grantire and Bayder was pestering me to keep in touch while we were at the station.

"Yes. I'll do everything and more. Oh, I'll miss you so much!" I say, hugging him.

"I can't believe your parents got over that embarrassing stunt."
