I wasn't good at long distance things, that I learned as the months passed. Maybe it was the fact that I cared so deeply for Ares and that I wanted a physical connection with him, not sex, but just the little things like actually seeing a smile on his face or being able to hold his hand.
It wasn't like I didn't trust him, I trusted him more then anyone else I had met before. It was just little insecurities that jabbed at me when we hadn't talked in a while. That maybe he didn't want to put effort into this relationship, that I wasn't worth it to him.
Maybe I wasn't.
But I didn't let those silent fears deter me. As I stood in the kitchen, a dirty dish between my hands as I washed them, the phone rang. I carefully placed the dish down, dried my hands and rushed to the phone.
Only one person ever called, Ares.
"Hey," his voice said, a little rushed but all the same it made me smile.
"Hey," I responded, a small blush on my cheeks as I realized how lame my response sounded.
"I got to make this quick," Ares said, "my lunch break's almost over, but I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday, dear. Congrats on turning eighteen Cashlin."
"Thanks, babe," I grinned.
"I hope you have a great rest of the day, okay?" Ares said, "I'm sorry I can't talk more. I'll try to talk to you later."
"Bye, it was nice talking to you. I miss you," I said.
A pause, "I miss you too."
Ares hung up the phone shortly afterwards but I couldn't help the smile that appeared on my face because of his words. He actually remembered my birthday and made time to call me.
Wow.
