I sat back in my seat on the plane, as we all made our way to the next destination of the tour; Oakland, Californeeyyaaaaa!
I put my earbuds in and closed my eyes, hoping to get a little sleep considering I was exhausted already. Of course, that wasn't gonna happen… Within 5 minutes someone was tapping on my shoulder furiously.
"Oh my god, what?!" I snapped my eyes open and ripped my earbuds out, looking around momentarily before my gaze rested upon Ryan.
"Mia! Shit you need to see this!" He gasped thrusting his IPhone into my palms. "1, this kid's absolutely fantastic! And B, I think we should do a cover of this song, it's amazing!"
I focused my gaze on the tiny screen, and turned the volume up all the way, so I could hear an older tune, that's been covered by legends like Johhny Cash, and also by recent artists like Ed Sheeran.
"I am a poor wayfaring stranger,
Traveling through this world alone.
There is no sickness, toil or danger
In that bright land to which I go."
I've known this song for a while, and fell in love with it when I first heard the Johnny Cash rendition almost 10 years ago. Instantly, I paused the video, and shot up from my seat, grabbing my guitar from the overhead storage bin.
I sat down with my Martin acoustic in my lap and tuned it quickly. I plucked the coils lightly, and instantly filled the, now, silent cabin with my rendition of this timeless song, while everyone watched me with wonder.
"And I'm going there to see my mother
And I'm going there no more to roam.
And I'm only going over Jordan
And I'm only going over home, now."
As I plucked out the small filler that was between verses, Carla, and Steven who both knew the song as well, backed me up with the little scatting; "Hey ay ay yeah!"
I grinned as Joey and RJ both applied beats, as Joey drummed on his lap, and RJ beatboxed, filling in the gaps Joey missed.
I paused my strumming, so I could sing the final chorus accapella, which is the original way the song is sung.
"I am a poor wayfaring stranger
Traveling through this world alone.
There is no sickness, toil, or danger
In the bright land to which I go.
And I'm going there to see my mother
And I'm going there no more to roam
And I'm only going over Jordan
And I'm only going over home."
As I finished off the last note, letting it curl off of my tongue deliciously, the entire plane cheered as clapped and giggled and laughed.
"That was awesome, Mia!" Carla gasped clapping like crazy.
"Guys, we should totally do that for a cover! Like in the studio and everything!" Jordan grinned, punching Ryan's bicep, causing them to get into a playfull scuffle.
"I'm down…" Ryan laughed, putting Jordan in a head lock.
"Yeah, me too!" RJ grinned, munching on a bag of airline peanuts.
