I was on my way to shop class when I was stopped by someone jumping in front of me.

"Hey, Y/n, may I have a word with you?" Derby Harrington questioned.

"Of course!" I beamed, causing a smile to spread across his face. He started walking me to class.

"So what's up?" I glanced over at him. There was a slight moment of silence before he figured out what he was going to say.

"How would you like to go to the carnival with me tonight?" He looked over at me with a smirk. My face baring a hint of red.

"Umm..." I was interrupted when someone purposely walked into Derby, making him lose balance and nearly fall to the ground.

I turned to see Johnny Vincent, my boyfriend of three months. I had been friends with him since the beginning of Sophomore year, but he was too obsessed with Lola to notice my insane crush on him.

He broke up with her at the end of Sophomore year, finally realizing that she didn't see him as he saw her.

A few months after that he started to notice me, and seemingly got angry when any guy tried to flirt with me. I never noticed the flirting, but apparently Johnny did.

"Watch it grease bag!" Derby insulted, glaring evilly at Johnny.

"No pal, you watch it," he wrapped one arm dominantly over my shoulders, returning Derbys glare, "keep away from my girl." With that being said, we walked away. I frowned at Derby apologetically as we passed him. His expression softened after seeing my face.

Johnny's loose grip around my shoulders slightly tightened as if telling me to stop looking at Derby.

"Why's Derby askin' you on a date?" Johnny broke the silence, with a hint of anger still in his voice.

"Johnny, me and Derby have been friends long before we started dating, I highly doubt he meant it as a date, he was just being... nice." I responded, not really knowing whether it was a date or just hanging out as friends.

"Yeah, he was bein' nice alright. A little too nice if ya ask me. I don't want him around you anymore." I gave Johnny a hateful look as we stopped in front of the shop garage. He frowned when he looked down at me.

"I'm sorry babe, I just really don't like the way he looks at you and the way he talks to you." I frowned back at his worried expression.

"Don't you trust me?" Johnny paused for a few seconds until the bell rang. His hesitation made me angry, so I hurriedly walked into my class.

---

I passed the time in shop class thinking about how Johnny could be such a jerk. I understand that Lola made him that way, but unlike her, I'm not a whore.

As soon as the bell rang, I jumped out of my seat, darting out the door.

I didn't have any classes left for the day, so I started towards the girls dorm. When I got there, I noticed Johnny and Derby outside.

As soon as I got close enough to see what was going on, Johnny threw a punch towards Derby's face. Derby dodged and ran at Johnny, tackling him. Right after they hit the ground, Derby raised his fist.

"Stop!" I yelled. Derby turned to look at me, instantly dropping his fist. His expression went from hostile to sincere as our eyes met. I frowned back at him for a second when out of nowhere, Johnny gathered all of his strength to punch Derby in the jaw.

I quickly ran over to them as Johnny got a few more hits in, him now being on top of Derby.

"Johnny! Stop!" I screamed, Peanut and Vance pulled Johnny off of Derby, having seen enough, and Parker ran over helping Derby up.

"Oh my god! Are you okay?!" I ran past Johnny to Derby, grabbing both of his arms and observing his face with a severely worried expression.

Johnny knew not to talk to me, walking away after I gave him the most hateful glare that I could possibly make.

"Come on Derby, let me help you." I grabbed Derby's hand, leading him through the girls dorm to my room. He sat on my bed as I searched for my medical kit.

"You truly don't need to do this Y/n," he started while standing up, "I'm fine." I slammed the palms of my hands down on the desk, frustrated.

"You're bleeding. You aren't 'fine'." Derby could tell how stressed I was, so he sat back down without another word.

There was a minute of silence when I finally remembered where I had put my medical kit. I sighed, pulling it out from one of my desk drawers.

"What happened?" I finally asked, walking over to Derby, sitting next to him.

"He was rather... Upset about me asking you to go to the carnival with me." He frowned.

"I'm sorry Derby," I sincerely apologized with a frown, pouring some peroxide onto a gauze pad, "this shouldn't have happened." I scooted closer to him and turned his face towards mine, observing the damage and wiping away blood.

There was silence as I started to clean the cuts on his face.

"It's not your fault," Derby finally responded as I finished cleaning his small wounds, and preparing bandages, "he doesn't deserve you." He whispered the last part with his head down.

"What?" I stopped what I was doing to look up at him. He lifted his head and looked me in the eyes.

"You deserve so much better than him," he was angry at the mention of 'him', "he doesn't appreciate your kindness, your intelligence, your... Beauty." He looked back down and I froze, looking at my lap with a nervous blush.

"I'm sorry Y/n," he was talking in a low, saddened voice, "you truly deserve so much more."

I panicked slightly. We sat there, in silence, for what felt like forever when I gathered up very little confidence, grabbing his hands. His head shot up, surprised, looking at me.

"Thank you Derby." I whispered, taking a few seconds to look up at him. A small, shy smile, one I'd never seen before, took over his sad expression. He reached one hand up, cupping my cheek and slowly leaned forward, giving me time to object if I wanted to, and I really didn't want to.

His lips crashed onto mine and it was the best feeling. Johnny had never kissed me with so much love and passion as Derby was at that moment.

My mind was racing a hundred miles an hour, that I didn't notice Derby laying me on my back into the kiss until he pulled away and slowly and softly started to kiss my neck.

This time I cupped my hand on his cheek, pulling him back in for another passionate kiss. He pulled on the bottom of my shirt and my brain finally started to work again.

I put my hands over my face, disappointed in myself. Derby quickly noticed my frustration and sat back up.

"What's wrong Y/n?" He was slightly panting.

I sat up and looked at him sadly.

"I really, really like you Derby," I emphasized the second really, "but I have to officially end things with Johnny before this," I motion my hand in the space between us, "whatever this will be, goes any further." I stood up, straightening my clothes.

"I understand completely Y/n," Derby stood up facing me, placing one hand on my waist, pulling me closer, and the other rubbing my back comfortingly, "you have no clue how long I have wanted this to happen." He rested his forehead on mine, smiling victoriously. I hugged him, burying my head in his neck.

'Here goes nothing' I thought as I pulled away from Derby, heading towards Johnny's hang out.

---

He didn't take the breakup too lightly. Our relationship ended with me being called a slut, a whore and multiple other horrible names. I couldn't help but to cry, causing the entire incident to end with a rematch between Johnny and Derby, but this time Derby the victor, and me being much happier with someone who actually appreciated me.
