Have you ever met someone and you just want to sweep them off their feet? That someone.. You just find yourself seeing them walk down the aisle at your wedding...and you haven't even said hello to them yet. Once you get to know them it's even better and you begin to wonder how you lived life without them, and you find you never want to lose them...If you ever did you don't know if you'd ever find your breath again that they stole from your chest when you first laid eyes on them... If you've ever found this person, you know what it's like to feel like the world is crashing down on you and feel like the world is building itself around you all at once. You know what it feels like to love. You know what it feels like to have the galaxy in your hands because they mean more than just the world to you. And then you lose them... Damon's thoughts boomed over all the silent people at the burial of his love. So many faces he'd never even seen before. Why did they have the right to be here?! Damon would almost bet they hadn't seen Kenny at all in the recent times. He swallowed thickly as his mind continued. Kenny was my world. My moon and my stars. My Galaxy. Now, he was gone. I'll never hear the doorbell at the shop ring with him coming to say hello. I will never hear his voice or his "I'll wait" again. I am sick and tired of the people around me pretending like they cared. Pretending like it was some fate planned event.
"I just want you back," Damon's voice broke as he laid a rose on his lovers chest. A tear fell onto his cheek, "I just want to hold you again.." Damon felt the white hot burn his eyes as he refused to let more tears fall.
Damon stepped away from the open casket and felt his heart in the pit of his stomach. What was wrong with him? He turned and saw the eyes on him. Did they expect him to say something? Who did these people think they were! He heard the preacher behind him, as he started to walk for the door, saying they would be walking soon to the burial ground. Damon pushed his way away from the funeral, refusing to watch as they buried his love and hear the stupid song playing in the background of the church. Hoping it would be less real if he wasn't around. Hoping maybe not being there would make this all a dream. Hoping he would get to hold the love of his life one more time. Hoping he would get his Kenny back.
Damon didn't realize he was crying until he sat in the drivers seat of his car. He carelessly wiped them away and drove home. The road was twisted and turned and his fingers were white knuckled on the steering wheel from holding it so tightly.
What gave God the right to take Kenny away from me? What gave him the right to take away the only thing that he could happily come home to? Damon threw his car to the drive way and parked it. He saw the yellow tape on his door: Crime Scene Do Not Cross. The same words read over and over on the vibrant color. Damon sighed and pushed past it, walking towards the woods. He knew the cops had told him to stay away from here, but he couldn't help it. It was his home. The last place he'd seen Kenny truly smile.
He paused a moment at the place he'd proposed. The memory swallowing him like a tidal wave.
"S-Shit!" Damon had panicked as his knees hit the ground with an unforgiving 'thud' before his shoulder collided with the ground.
"Babe!" Kenny had spun around and raced to Damon's side, but before he was able to kneel down to help him out, Damon had already sat up.
"I-I dropped something.." Damon had searched the ground viciously.
Kenny rolled his eyes and leaned down and began to search with Damon for the thing he had dropped. "You're a mess.." He had chuckled. Kenny propped it open and had seen a ring neatly placed into the box. "What?" Kenny's voice was questioning when he'd looked up at Damon, "Why did you have this on you?"
"It..um...." Damon looked down, but his cheeks persisted on blushing. "It was my grandmother's ring box.." An awkward chuckle fell past Damon's lips, but he forced himself to continue, "It wasn't supposed to go like this....I was going to back at the river.." Damon blushed a little harder and had ran his hand down his face. "It was going to be way more romantic than this I promise.." Another awkward chuckle escaped Damon's lips. Damon remembered his heart going at least a million miles an hour.
"W-What?" Kenny asked, not sure what to think. His eyes just stared at Damon searching for an answer. Searching for what he was trying to say.
"I...um..." Damon looked up, finding he was virtually nose to nose with Kenny. He gulped trying to get his words to form on his tongue. He shouldn't be this nervous. He chuckled softly to himself as his fear. "I was going to ask you if you would marry me."
It was Kenny's turn to blush as he gaped at Damon. His mouth didn't move to say anything. All Kenny could do was stare and replay Damon's words in his mind.
"Would you?" Damon almost cringed when he realized how needy his voice came out as. He didn't want to seem clingy.. Maybe he was being to pushy, too arrogant. "I swear you don't have to wear a dress." Damon laughed trying to add humor to the situation.
A small laugh left Kenny's lips and he forced his muscles to relax. "You're a nerd.."
Damon smiled back and swiftly grabbed the box from Kenny. "Stand up," Damon's voice was soft and he moved to be on one knee, "I wanna do this at least a little better."
Kenny chuckled but stood up. It was then Kenny noticed the stars had descended unto the sky and laid over it like a blanket. If he stood too far from Damon, he feared he would only be able to see his lovers silhouette.
"My dearest love. Will you do the honor of being my husband," Damon smiled foolishly and choked back his chuckles, "and be mine now and forever."
Kenny smiled back, quite foolishly himself. "I do?" Kenny more asked his answer. What was he supposed to say in a situation like this?
"Don't sound so sure." Damon laughed, his words were thick with sarcasm. Slowly, he stood and wrapped his arms around Kenny, pulling him close. "Here.." Damon muttered and slipped the ring onto Kenny's ring finger. "Perfect!" Damon smiled wide, exposing all of his front teeth and squinting his eyes.
"You're a dork." Kenny laughed and wrapped his arms around Damon and rested his head on his shoulder.
"Your dork." Damon said softly and ran a hand through Kenny's hair, "let's get back home before it gets too dark out here."
Damon smiled at the now bitter sweet memory. It was hard to imagine that was such a short time ago. Slowly, he approached the river, a once happy place now burdened by memories of the one he'd lost. He could almost see Kenny dancing in his arms, and laughing as he spun him. He could almost still feel how perfect it all was.
He walked over and stood at the end of the river, playing with his ring. He would do anything to get Kenny back. His fists grabbed the rocks and threw them at the river from the sudden anger boiling in his veins. Green eyes turned to the sky after the 'plunk' of the largest rock he could find. "Why couldn't you just take me?" His voice carried to the heavens, echoing off the trees. It wasn't like he had neighbors to worry about. "Why didn't you just take me, you fucking bastard!" Damon felt tears fall down his face and he opened his arms to the sky, "Just give me him back!" His fists rammed into a tree and he found himself leaning against it for support. His head ached from such anger. "I just want him back.." His was soft and he felt more tears roll down his face, "I'd give anything just to get him back..."
Damon walked back to his car, eyes red and puffy and nose sniffling every five seconds. He was a mess. His hands pulled at his hair trying to pull himself back together as he slid into his car. Damon drove to the hotel he had been sleeping at since Kenny's death. The bed was a brick and the walls were so thin he could almost hear full conversations from the next room, but it was a place to stay.
Slowly, he shut the door behind him and began to play with the ring. It slipped off his finger and he began to look at it. A small engraving caught his eye. Kenny had gotten it engraved? He pulled the ring closer and looked at the black writing. I'll wait. Damon swallowed heavily and slipped the ring back on his finger. He didn't sleep well that night.
