The hospital was cold and unwelcoming with it's white walls with blue lines. The distant sounds of beeping and people talking carried softly through the hospital. But this room was dead silent. People sat, not saying a word; It made one wonder what they were here for. If a human was able to sense sorrow, they would be able to in this room.

"Damon?" A nurse said and Damon jumped to his feet. She didn't even look up from her clip board, "follow me."

Damon followed, as instructed, and watched how the nurses auburn hair bounced as she walked. He noticed the ways her hips walked in an all business manner and she never stopped writing on her clipboard something. "How is he doing?" Damon asked, curiosity getting the better of him and wanting to know what he was going to see when he walked into the hospital room.

"He's no longer critical and we got him almost to stability." The nurse said and stopped at a large door. A part of Damon didn't want to go through it. "He's beyond this door." She placed the clipboard in the cubby beside the door's large frame, "he's been asking for you since he regained consciousness." She pushed open the door, "the doctors will be back in twenty minutes to check up on him, if he needs anything before then, there's a help button by his bed. Big and red, you can't miss it."

"Thank you." Damon flashed her a smile before pushing into the freezing room. Kenny was laying on the bed, the covers pulled up and tucked neatly under his arms. A heart monitor beeped softly with his pulse and in his arm was stuck an IV. Alone by the bed, sat a chair positioned perfectly to be close enough to the person when they would fall asleep. The room was the same color white as the waiting room and about as cold as well.

"Damon?" Kenny's voice was soft and weak.

"Who else?" Damon smirked and sat down in the chair. His hand found Kenny's and wrapped itself around it.

Kenny smiled lightly, but said nothing in response. He looked back at the ceiling and just stared. His chest rose and fell softly and his hand gripped tightly to Damon's. "What do you think happens when we die?" Kenny asked, his voice seeming small and feeble.

"That's a little morbid, babe." Damon responded and brushed some hair out of Kenny's face.

"Yea." Kenny laughed softly, "I guess it kind of is morbid."

"Besides," Damon smiled. He leaned over and kissed Kenny's chapped lips, "you don't have to worry. The nurse said you're almost stable. You can go home soon." Damon sat back up and stroked Kenny's hand, "you're going to be alright."

Kenny fell silent. His face contorted in pain and he squeezed his eyes shut. Coughs began to leave his lips leaving Kenny gasping to get breath. Red liquid found its way past Kenny's lips and some spat onto the hand he was coughing into.

Damon searched frantically for the button. When he found it, his fist fell just short of punching it. "You're gonna be okay..." Damon said quickly squeezing the hand Kenny wasn't coughing into.

Kenny paused, gasping for breath and trying to wipe the blood off his hands. "I'm...I'm okay.." Kenny's voice was hoarse and he wiped his mouth, "I think I'm okay."

The door to the room swung open and a doctor and two nurses pushed inside. "Sir," the doctors voice boomed, "we're going to have to ask you to leave."

"No!" Kenny panicked, throwing himself into another fit of coughs.

"Hey." Damon cooed softly. "I'll be right back in here the second I can." He brushed away the hair in Kenny's face, calming his coughs. "I'll see you later. Kay?"

Kenny nodded. "Okay....Okay...I'll wait for later."

Damon smiled softly and stood up. "I'll be back before you know it."

"Promise you'll come back for me." Kenny felt a tear roll down his cheek. Pain and sorrow were not a good mix.

"I promise." Swiftly, Damon made his exit from the room.

The door shut heavily and left Damon in the hallway, alone and scared. What was going to happen to Kenny? Would he be alright? Damon's back leaned against the wall and he put his head in his hands. His body slowly sank down the wall and he let it, he let his body cower against the wall in sheer terror of the future. He couldn't do it. He couldn't lose Kenny.

Eternity had nothing on waiting to be told your love ones were going to be okay. And an eternity in hell had nothing on being told your loved one was going to die. Damon stood as soon as he heard the door open. The auburn haired nurse just shook her head and the doctor put his hand on Damon's shoulder as if to offer some condolences. Damon felt like he was underwater; he could hear the words everyone was saying but they were so drowned out. Slowly, he made his way into the room and saw Kenny laying on the bed.

"Hey baby.." Damon tried to smile, but even he knew the tears in his eyes were visible. The heart monitor was off and Kenny's chest wasn't moving. Maybe he was imagining things. Maybe the heart monitor was just drown out with the rest off the world. If Kenny would just open his eyes... "I'm back. I promised I would be..." Still Kenny didn't move. Damon sat in the chair and wrapped Kenny's hand in his. "I told you you'd be okay..." If Kenny would just fucking move! A tear fell down Damon's cheek, "you have to be okay.." Damon's lips let out shaky sobs as he bowed his head. "I can't lose you... I don't want to lose you."
