I look the train tracks up and down. The sun is already setting and i am still waiting for Tobias. I tap my foot. Where is he? What takes him so long? I sigh and slowly sit down on the ground.
Suddenly i hear steps behind me. I turn around and see Tobias walking towards me. He holds a bouquet of flowers. Red and white roses. I gasp and jump up. "Tobias!" I squeel quietly and run towards him. He laughs and easily picks me up. He twirls me around with one arm. "How did i earn this?" I squeel. "Well i had to make up for a few things." I smile and kiss him. He hands me the flowers and i smile at them. "They are so beautiful. Thank you so much. Where did you get them? They only grow at the amity compound." Tobias smirks. "Well that is my secret." I kiss him again. "Thank you so so much." He laughs. "Okay come on now. Or we will miss the train."
And sure enough in that moment i hear the characteristic buzzing of the train. I start jogging with Tobias next to me. I quickly hand him the flowers before i jump and push open the door. He hands them back to me and jumps on himself. I laugh and twirl the flowers in my arms. He laughs as well. "I'm glad i made you happy." "I am glad to have you." I answer and run towards him. He picks me up again and i press my lips to his. We kiss for a while before we sit down on the edge of the train and let our feet hang.
After a twenty minute ride and me asking about three hundred times when we will arrive he finally instructs that it now is time to jump off. "Be carefull. The train doesn't stop here. We have to jump off at full speed." He warns me. "Okay now." He says and hurls himself out of the cart. I jump after him - clutching the flowers to my chest - and prepare myself for the impact.
My feet hit the ground hard and immeditaly my knees give in underneath me. I crash forward and in the last minute manage to stop my fall with my hands. My feet and my knees hurt from the hard impact and the palms of my hands are scratched. "Are you okay?" Tobias jogs towards me. "Yeah. Just a few scratches." He helps me up and just now i notice that blood is trickling down my hand. I look at my arm and see a long cut that goes from my elbow down to the middle of my under arm. "Shit." I curse. Tobias whips around. I show the wound to him. His fingers work fast and precise. He ribs out a piece of his shirt and wraps it around my arm. "Is this to tight?" I shake my head no. "Thank you." I say and press a short kiss to his cheek. He takes my healthy hand in his and leads me away from the tracks.
"Where are we going?" I ask after he got out a flashlight. It starts to get darker and we are in an abandond part of the city so there are no lights. "Wait a few more minutes." So i sigh and wait.
While we climb over fallen street lights and find our way through ruins i always got the slight feeling of someone watching me. I look over my shoulder every other second and only tobias warm hand in mine reasures me. "We are there in a few minutes." I take a closer look at the houses and see more and more lights flacker behind the broken windows. Fires. Just then it clicks in my head. "We are at the factionless sector." He only nods. He leads me with a safe step - as if he walked this way thousand times and maybe he did - towards a not that broken house. There is a wodden door and the broken windows are secured with wooden planks. When we step closer to the house a man suddenly steps out of the shadow. His hand hovers over a pistol that is in a holster at his belt. "Hey!" He says with a loud voice. "Who are you?" Tobias steps forward. "Tobias Eaton." He moves his head towards the door. "She wants to see me." The man opens the door for us. I frown. Why does only his name opens this door? Who is this 'she' that waits for my Tobias.
I try to hold back the jealousy but it immediatly floads my body.
Tobias wants to lead me inside but the man stops me by wraping his hand around my arm. "Wait. Who is she?" Tobias turns around. "She belongs to me." The man only slowly looses his grip. "I have to check her for weapons." I glare at him. "Don't you dare touch me." I growl. "I don't have any weapons." The man looks at the both of us for a few seconds but then releases my arm. I stride past him and tobias leads me deeper inside the house. There are a few rooms with factionless sitting around a fire but none of them greet us or do anything so i do neither. Tobias leads me towards a door at the end of the hallway. He knocks three times and then waits four second before he knocks two times. Then he enters.
The room we enter is middle sized. A woman sits behind a desk and a boy in my age with a dark red eye patch with a black cross on it, stands on her right side. They both look at us. Just then i recognise Edward. Edward whos blood i wiped from the floor. Edward who i held in my arms while he lay on the floor with a knife sticking out of his eye.
"Hello Tobias." The woman greets. I dont wonder why she knows Tobias name. Everyone seems to. But she seems odly familiar. Maybe i helped her when i did comunity service in abnegation. "Hello Tris. I wasn't expecting to see you again." Edward now greets me. I smile a bit. "Me neither. Its good to see you though." "Okay i see you two know eachother. Maybe you could discuss that outside while i talk to my son." The woman says. My eyes widen. "No evelyn. Tris stays. She is the reason i am here today." Tobias says and lays a hand on my shoulder. I am in shock. This is evelyn! Tobias mother! That died when i was two or three! Well apparently didn't die... I stare at both of them. "W-wait. What? How?" I stutter and shake my head in disbelieve. "What does she want here?" Evelyn asks her son - completly ignoring me. "She has a right to know this." Evelyn rolls her eyes. "Did you tell her all of this?" I look at tobias but the look he gives his mother means 'no'. I wonder what there is to come. I mean seeing someone who is supposed to be dead is a pretty weird thing. There is not much that could beat that. "So you are just here because otherwise she wouldn't have believed you." Tobias nods. "Yes. I wanted to tell and show her why i was away so many times and left her alone." Evelyn nods. "Okay then. I am sorry to throw you out but we have some things to discuss." Edward gives me a slight smile and i try to return it but only manage a grimace. Tobias nods and takes me by my shoulders. He leads me outside and closes the door. We just stand infront of eachother. "So that was the big secret." I say still shocked. "Yes. Evelyn - she faked her death to escape Marcus. Well the abnegation kind of forced her to run away just to protect Marcus's image. I mean a leader that beat his wife... not so good. She flee to the factionless and kind of united them. They searched for the least broken buildings and built their bases in them. A few years ago she reconected with me because she heard that i escaped Marcus. And from then on i visited her some times. So yeah. This is what i've been doing." He looks at me and i can't do anything but stare back. "Okay. So your mother never died. And she left you alone with an abusive father..." he doesn't meet my eyes and nods. "And now you are helping her... Did i get that right?" He slowly nods again. There are a few minutes of silence. "Ehm okay then. Just give me a day to cope with this. Its pretty much to take in." He nods and leads me down the hallway again. The voices in the rooms got louder. Tobias intervines his hand with mine and i am glad to feel his presence.
We pass a room with about six factionless who are sitting around a fire. One of them stands up and walks towards us with a smile on his face. "Toby boy!" Tobias glares at him. "Not now Jason." The boy - Jason - rolls his eyes and then spots me. "Uhh who is that girl you brought? Does she want to join as well?" Tobias eyes widen and my breath sticks in my throat. I need a few seconds to realise what he just said. Join us... as well... I slip my hand out of Tobias's and lean at the wall for support. "I said not now!" Tobias growls and Jason looks between me and tobias confused. Then he seems to realise and bites his tounge. "Sorry. I-i'll just go now." And with that he walks back to the fire. I just stare at Tobias. "What?" I choke out after a few seconds. Tobias averts his eyes. "I wanted to tell you. And it only is a oppertunity. I would have talked to you before. I want you to come with me." I didn't think it was possible but my eyes grow even wider. "Wait a second. You want me to join the factionless together with you... For your mother..." He slowly nods. "Yeah kind of." I shake my head. "Unbelievable." "Tris... I would have told you today. I wanted to talk to you when we came back." He wants to take my hands but i rib them away. "When did you start to plan this?" "I always planed to tell you." "When tobias? When did you plan to leave me?" He quickly shakes his head. "No! I never planed to leave you." "When?" I ask again. By now i am boiling with anger. "In the middle of initiation i got the offer the first time." I am shocked. "In the middle of initiation? Really? The whole time of our relationship you lied to me? You lied every second? Every time i asked you whether something happend you lied! In my face! Without hesitating." He looks at me pleading. "Tris please..." I interupt him. "No Four!" I spit out his nickname. "I-i'll just have to think about that. Just leave me alone for a while." "Tris please wait." He says but i don't even turn around again. I step out of the building and see the bouquet of flowers. The beautiful flowers laugh at my face. I feel tears behind my eyes and start to jog. I go faster and faster untill i sprint. I have to be carefull to don't fall and break and limps. I jump over lanterns and over large parts of houses. I run and run and run. After a few minutes my legs are hurting and my lungs burning but i finally feel like i have a clear head again. Evelyn Eaton is alive. Tobias wants to join the factionless. A huge weight settles on my heart. He wants to leave me. I have to fight tears while i wait for the train. After a few minutes i hear steps behind me. I pray that it's not tobias. That it is a factionless man but of course my wishes don't get fullfilled. "Are you okay?" I hear tobias voice behind me. I shake my head and slowly turn around. "Whether i am okay? The boy i love wants to leave me! What do you think?" Just then i notice what i just said. He seems to notice as well and stares at me. "You love me?" I groan. "Of course i do! Of course i love you! But you want to leave me!" I turn around and walk away again. "And by the way 'leave me alone' means that someone wants to be left alone!" He doesn't respond and so i just keep walking.
After a while i hear the buzzing of the train and start jogging along the tracks. I start sprinting because the train still is so fast. I jump and clutch the handle for support. I climb into the train and stumble back in the corner of the waggon. After a few seconds suddenly someone else jumps in the train as well. I recognise the silhouette as Tobias. I just want to yell at him that he shouldn't follow me when i notice that he doesn't even notice that i am here. He sits down on the edge of the train and lets his feet hang. It might be the wind fooling me but i think i hear him sobbing. When i look at him i do notice that his body shakes. My heart clenches. He is crying. He is crying. The mighty four is crying. His shoulders are hunched over. He wipes his eyes with the back of his hand. I now feel tears behind my eyes as well. Tobias is crying because of me. Although this touches me i am still mad and i don't plan on forgiving him anytime soon.
