Chapter 21: Death by her
"Mel," Jesse said, placing his other hand over hers. His cheeks were tinted pink. "We're completely by ourselves in a secluded place for the night," he said, biting his lip. "I'm a twenty year old guy and you're a twenty year old girl. There's no one else around... Aren't we suppose to feel something?"
Melissa felt her face go red. "What are you talking about?" she said, looking away.
"I know we've been only friends for so long," Jesse rambled. "But I want you to see me as a guy. You know, someone who could pursue you. I want you to see me like other guys. I don't want to be the big brother..."
Melissa gave him a small smile. "JJ..." she said. "You'll always be my best friend."
"But that's not what I only want to be," Jesse said. He leaned his face closer to Melissa's. "I want you to see me-"
The door flew open. "As a guy," Ryan said, grabbing Melissa's arm. In one fluid motion, he threw her over his shoulder. "Don't worry, underling," Ryan said, holding a shocked Melissa. "I'll see you as a man..."
Ryan narrowed his eyes at Jesse. Jesse clenched his fist and stood up. They locked eyes for a few minutes until Ryan turned and walked away with Melissa.
"R-Ryan," Melissa said as Ryan carried her back. He opened her trailer door and carried her inside, locking it behind him. Only then did he set her on the ground.
Melissa nervously tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. "What were you doing out?" she asked.
"What were you doing out?"
"Nothing!" Melissa exclaimed, too quickly.
"Didn't look like nothing," Ryan said.
"J-Jesse was just looking for food except he didn't know that actors weren't allowed in the storage room. I just went to go get him," Melissa explained. "Then we were looking for a way out," she lied.
Ryan studied her. He then placed a finger under his chin. "I'm going to be upset with you if you lie to me," he warned.
Melissa felt her cheeks go up in flames. "I-I wasn't lying! Jesse didn't mean what he was saying!"
"Man, Mel," Ryan said. "You sure know how make a man feel things," he said, taking a step closer to her.
Melissa took a step back. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You're always taking care of him," Ryan said, taking another step forward. Melissa stepped back. "How come you never worry about me like that? Why does news about an injury of mine not send you running?"
Melissa's back was pressed against the wall. "When were you ever injured..." she muttered, wringing the bottom of her t-shirt.
Ryan leaned an elbow on the wall, cornering her. "You know, Melissa," he said in a low voice. "You know how a man feels when another man is getting all of attention from his girl?"
"His girl?!" Melissa exclaimed. "I'm not your girl!"
"I've been sulking around since that guy has gotten here," Ryan said. "I want you to shower me with attention like that. I want you to feel something when we're all alone. I want you to feel emotions around me."
