Katie let the cool blue water wrap around her body. She broke into a breast stroke at once, it was her instinct. Katie knew this, swimming, was what she was born to do. She sped across the deep fifty meter pool faster than any of the other girls on her swim team. Katie smirked, knowing Mr. Riverside was watching. She knew that the other girls, even Amber, would be marveling at her speed and grace one day, when she was the best of the best.

Katie touched the other end of the pool. She was the first, as usual. Her eyes glittered like crystals when she looked back a couple seconds later to see Amber was "leading the pack", and still had a couple more meters to go before she reached the end.

"Great job, Katie!" Mr. Riverside commended her when she looked up at him. "That's why you're the captain of the team!" He said with a smile. Mr. Riverside's chocolate brown eyes glowed with pride at his best swimmer for a second.

"And I'm the second best!" Amber announced cheerfully, Katie hadn't realized she'd finished yet. Mr. Riverside nodded. "Yes, you've worked hard to get there too!" He said and walked off with a smile.

"Do you ever mind, being second best to your best friend?" Katie asked, she tried not to feel bad for Amber. It wasn't her fault Katie was just, better. Katie always reminded herself to go easy on her best friend. After all, Amber did try hard. And it payed off. "Nah!" Amber said cheerfully. "You're my best friend. I've worked hard to be second best and if that's the best I can be I'm fine with that," Amber said. Although Katie swore her pretty blue eyes sparkled with longing.
