Chapter 22: What Is Up With These Two?
Lorelai's P.O.V.
"Lorelai!" she greets.
"Hi mom?" I say warily, not moving from my stance in the doorway.
"Well come in, come in."
"No." I state, eyeing her up and down skeptically.
"What? Why?"
"Because you're unusually cheery and it's scaring me."
"Oh stop making your silly jokes and get in here." she tugs at my arm, forcing me into the foyer. "Give the maid your coats and come with me to the living room." she orders and I do as I'm told, still skeptical of her odd behavior.
"What's going on, mom?" I inquire as I follow her.
"What makes you think something is going on?" she asks, approaching the drink cart that is still in its usual spot.
"You never act like this happy. Did you finally find a maid you're going to keep?"
"No, I'm firing her tomorrow."
"What did this one do?"
"She opens her mouth far too wide. I don't want to see down her throat whenever I speak with her."
"Seriously, mom?"
"I wanted a maid, not a hippopotamus."
"One of these days you're going to run out of maids to hire and you're going to be very lonely."
"Oh stop it."
"So if it isn't the maid then why are you so happy?"
"I just am. Is it so wrong to be in a joyful mood?"
"For you? Yes."
"Why thank you, Lorelai." she replies sarcastically, handing me a martini.
"That sounds like you. Much better."
She simply rolls her eyes and prepares herself a drink.
"Where's dad?"
"In his study, I requested him to join us but he's being his usual self."
"Work still has him busy, huh?"
"It always has."
Just as she says that, dad comes strutting in with his hands resting on his suit button, unclasping it in preparation to sit down.
"Hi dad." I greet him.
"Hello Lorelai, how are you this evening?"
"I'm fine. Your wife is peculiarly cheerful."
"Oh she is? And why is that, Emily?" he turns to her and she hands him a small glass of scotch.
"Nothing, there's nothing different." she defends but I shake my head in amusement and disbelief.
"Oh by the way, Rory told me to tell you both hello and that she misses you very much." I change the subject and their faces instantly lighten up at the mention of her.
"Why didn't she tell us that herself?" Dad asks.
"She wanted to call but her time was cut short because of an interview she had to cover."
"We understand, don't we, Richard?" Mom says, suggestion thick in her voice.
"Yes, of course. Well hopefully these dinners will be filled with her presence soon." he replies and we all nod.
