It seemed like someone sucked all the air out of the room. Barry felt a shaky breath leave his lips as he watched Gen take steps towards him, her black heeled boots creating a soft echo.
"Do they know-"
"That I'm here?" Gen finished his sentence, "No. Let's keep it that way for now."
Gen's words were cold and sharp. This wasn't the Gen that Barry remembered.
All he wanted to do was run to her and give her the biggest hug ever, but by the looks of it she didn't feel the same way.
"Gen, why are you here?" Barry eyed her nervously.
She glanced around the room, her gaze staying on Dr. Wells for a few seconds before landing back on Barry. "I'm tired Barry. I'm just...tired."
He watched a glimpse of emotion flash in her eyes before it disappeared.
Grief.
"Tired of what?" Barry hesitantly took a step towards her.
Gen stopped walking and crossed her arms, "I'm tired of lying. To you. To Cait and Cisco. To Oliver. I'm drowning Barry."
All Gen wanted to do was tell everyone the truth, especially Barry, and disappear. On the train ride here she prepared herself emotionally, or so she thought.
"It's just like any other mission," she told herself.
It that once she stepped through those metal double doors all that preparation and professionalism flew out the window.
Gen didn't want to cry, but she already felt a lump forming in her throat. The fact that Barry was staring at her, pure love and concern in his beautiful eyes, didn't help either.
This was going to destroy him.
She remembered what Ollie told her, "You have to tell him the truth, no matter what."
She gulped and crossed her arms over her chest, "Barry I came here for one reason only. I need to be honest with you."
Once Gen started talking it's like she couldn't stop. She knew if she did those words she wanted to say to him would never surface again.
"I didn't leave Central City because I felt unsafe. Well, there's some truth to that, but anyway that's not the real reason. I left because you all were in danger."
Barry tried comprehending what she was saying, but it wasn't adding up. "What do you mean we were in danger?"
"Barry I work for some very powerful people who recently have been attacked by some other powerful people," Gen bit her lip nervously, "what I'm trying to say is that...I'm an assassin Barry. I work for a top secret agency and I was being hunted. I needed to leave so no one else got hurt."
She took a deep breath and watched Barry's expression change. She could see it in his eyes, him trying to process what she just told her. Gen couldn't blame him though, it was a lot to take in.
"Who else knows," Barry asked quietly.
"Ollie and now you." Gen lowered her gaze, seeing the immediate hurt in his eyes.
"Oliver knows?" Barry turned away from Gen with a fist clutched at his side, "For how long?"
Gen took a step closer to him and tried to reach a hand out, but he gave her a look full of betrayal and hurt and she lowered her hand, "About a couple of weeks. I had gone to see him before I made the trip to come back here."
That seemed to be the final straw for Barry. He rushed past Gen, making his way towards The Cortex. Honestly, anywhere away from Gen was better than where he was now.
Gen quickly spun around, "Barry wait! Barry please, just listen to what I have to-"
"No Gen!" Barry spun back around and yelled.
That took Gen by suprise, causing her to stop. Barry had this look in his eye telling her to shut up and listen.
"I can't do this right now Gen. First I find out that Dr. Wells, the man I have looked up to like a father figure is the one who killed my mother, and I can't even kill him. Then I find out that the woman I'm in love with is a cold blooded killer who doesn't seem to care about anyone but herself. Gen I...I think you should go."
With that, Barry stormed out leaving a heartbroken Genevieve in his wake.
