-Chester-
A kiss from my best friend.Pretty insane… but purely bewildering.
I lay down on my bed that night after the party, still remembering the kiss Naomi gave me as a part of the “game”. It was really awkward for us to kiss each other when we both knew we were just friends. I didn’t know what to feel, but a strange feeling swept off my heart and left me swinging in eccentric joy. The kiss was my first one, and sadly, it happened in an unexpected situation- the one which I never dreamed of happening. For me, that was enough. Tomorrow would be my day to awkwardness. I put a finger on my lips, and then drifted myself to sleep.
The next morning was absolute hell. All the people were looking at me as if I was a Youtube sensation, or someone who just won five million dollars in a reality show. Some girls even waved and said “Hi” to me. I had no choice but to give the gesture back and be as amiable as I could be.
Andrew ran up to me.
“Hey, Chester! How did the kiss feel?”
I rolled my eyes. I hoped it was obvious to him how awkward I feel.
“Where’s Naomi? I need to talk to her.” I asked instead, to avoid answering his question verbally.
“In your room.” he said.
“Okay, I’m going.” I left him alone and hurried to our classroom.
When I came in, all of my classmates looked at me with unusual smiles on their faces. I ignored them and made my way to Naomi’s desk. She was reading a book. I stood in front of her, and she stopped reading for a while.
“What? Do you want to say something?” she asked in her usual tone. God, how could she pretend like nothing happened?
“Um… I just want talk about the kiss we had last night.” I said.
She looked at me with sharp eyes. “Forget it.” she answered and resumed to reading.
I fell flat on my face. This was the first time that she put me into real shame. I choked and left the room without answering or talking back to her.
For the rest of the day, I felt so alone. Naomi kept on avoiding me. When I walked to a certain direction, she takes the opposite one. She didn’t talk to me, text me, nor even bothered to call my name, though we were just seated right next to each other. I could possibly die the next minute if she didn’t speak to me. While classes were going one, I secretly looked at her and wished that last night’s incident didn’t happen.
-Naomi-
I didn’t know if I could still stand this thing. I felt so guilty, avoiding Chester when there was no reason to do so. This was totally crazy. He was so pitiful, but I had no other means of telling him that I felt awkward as well.
I was heading to the ladies’ bathroom when I met him along the way. We both stopped and faced each other.
“What?” I asked, irritation dominating my voice
“Can I talk to you for a while?” he said.
I looked at him sharply. “About the kiss, right? I told you to forget it. Please don’t be that dumb.” I said and took a couple of steps to where I was heading, but he blocked my way. I walked to the right, and he blocked me again. We remained this way for almost a minute, not until I kicked his leg.
“Alright, so we’ll settle this thing. I have to be honest. The kiss was just so shameful, and we feel the same way. Now, all I want is one thing. Let’s forget it and be friends again. Clear?”
He tried to absorb what I said, and then he nodded.
“Clear.” he answered, extending his hand.
I shook it and smiled. “Let’s call it quits.”
“Yeah. Quits.” he said. I was happy to see him smile again, like he always did every day. It was better to be like this, than we keep on taking opposite roads. And I did really hope that I’d forget that fateful kiss forever.
