"So...Lily won prom queen." Erica said slowly as she took out trash from her locker. I nodded my head and held the plastic trash bag out for her. It was the last day of school and everyone was cleaning out every piece of property they temporary owned at the school. Everyone wouldn't stop talking about Lily's fortunate news. Allison was getting annoyed with people asking why it wasn't her that won the title, and I was getting annoyed with everyone saying that I didn't deserve to be the prom king's girlfriend.
Anyway, Erica still had an attitude issue ever since that night at Prom, and she never really told me why.
"That bites," She kept throwing her old binders and paper and pencils in the trash bag and slammed the locker door, "It's always the people who don't deserve good things and yet, they get it anyway." She turned to me and stared me in the eyes, and I watched them curiously. Her eyes...they read something. I couldn't really figure it out, but the way she looked at me, it just gave me thoughts.
She walked away without saying anything else to me. I stared at her with a raised eyebrow, my heart stumbling. What's her problem? I shook the question out of my head and ran back up to her. It was time to go home and everyone was saying their goodbyes to everyone. Since I didn't really have a lot of friends, I only said my goodbyes to my teacher. I already knew I'd see the few friends that I had this summer anyway.
"Hey Erica," I said to her as I caught up with her. She continued walking, rummaging through her bag for her car keys, I assume.
"Hmm?" She asked, her eyes still in her bag.
"To celebrate the last day, why don't we just...go and get some ice cream right quick?" I suggested with a small but hopeful smile, "I mean, it's kind of hot out so ice cream is perfect for-"
"Um, no thanks. I have...I have a lot of homework to do." She mumbled, still walking fast. I started walking faster as well. Really Erica? Really? I mean, I knew she wasn't always the brightest crayon in the crayola box, but still.
"You have...homework on the last day of school?" I questioned skeptically.
"Yes!" She snapped at me. I jumped for a second and we both stopped walking and she gave me a venomous look.
"Erica, what's...wrong? What's wrong with you?" I slowly raised an eyebrow at her suspiciously, concerned at the same time.
"Nothing, Denny." She ran her fingers through her hair and gave me a small reassuring smile. Her smile also looked apologetic, but for some reason I wasn't responding to it. "I just...I really do have homework and, I have to turn it all in tomorrow before the teachers put our grades and Exam scores on our report cards."
"Oh..." I still didn't believe her, however I didn't want to bother her any longer. So I just slowly nodded and said, "Well...maybe some other time."
"Yeah," She nodded her head, "We have the whole summer to get ice cream. Don't stress it." She patted my shoulder and walked away, not saying anything else.
I watched her walk away from me, and she slowly started fading away. I was about to go down to the atrium to meet Blake, but then I felt someone touch my shoulder.
I turned around and Elaine stood there with a serious look. My eyes widened when I noticed that his hair...his hair...was...a lighter shade of brown. I stared at him and he just smiled. "Well?" He asked, pointing to his hair.
"What happened to your hair?" I asked in shock.
"I dyed it just on Saturday. I thought I needed a small change, you know? Everyone's cutting their hair for the summer so instead of cutting mine, I wanted to dye it. So...?" He waited for my feedback. How could he just talk to me casually, after he admitted to liking me, to being jealous of Blake? I quickly erased the thought out of my head and alternated my shocked face expression to a smile. I stared at his light brown hair. His light eyes looked humored as they melted into mine, waiting for me to respond.
