The owlery was calm for a Friday afternoon, which Emerson thought was quite nice. She enjoyed seeing the different owls that all of the other students owned, though she never wanted to own one herself. Coralie had an owl though, a tiny brown owl named Ceres. She seemed more energetic than usual, but that might have been from the dead mouse that hung from her beak.

A week after Hermione Granger was petrified, Coralie finally responded to Emerson's letter.

Emery,

I'm very devastated to hear about what is happening at Hogwarts. The Ministry has been informed of course, and they are requesting that the Prophet write an article about what is happening, and Dumbledore's inability to stop the attacks. I have declined many times, but they are pressuring me.

Please keep me informed if anything more happens. I would like to hear it directly from you, rather than Fudge.

Happy birthday, my dearest. We will celebrate when you arrive home. I love you
Mum

Emerson smiled as she folded up the letter and shoved it in her pocket. It was May 15th, finally her fifteenth birthday. She was excited as she knew her friends were planning a small surprise for her. Of course, she wasn't supposed to know but the one thing that her roommates were poor at was keeping secrets.

After scribbeling a quick reply to her mother, Emerson started back towards the castle, eager to get back to her friends. They had told her to make herself scarce for a while so she took the opportunity to write back to her mother.

The castle was dim and quiet when she entered. It was nearing six o'clock, the remaining students in the corridors were rushing to their common rooms, careful not to get in trouble. Emerson entered the portrait hole to Gryffindor tower, and she smiled at the scene before her.

Oblivious to Emerson's presence, Fred and George, Angelina, Alicia, and Katie, and Lee were setting up a small projector in the common room. Pulling couches and chairs aside, they all muttered various swear words, and Lee huffed "Wouldn't it just have been easier to get her a cake and firewhiskey?" and George gave him a very pointed look and said "No, this is Emery's special day, it needs to be perfect" and Fred was yelling at Emerson's cat who was crawling around his ankles, telling her to "Move before I make you serve cat detention with McGonagall."

Other Gryffindor's in the tower looked at Emerson, who just put her finger to her lips and shook her head. She enjoyed watching her friends put a film night together just for her. She wished she would've thought about the idea for the twins' birthday. Instead she bought an entire box of various goods from Zonko's and sweets from Honeydukes.

As George groaned trying to put a chair back in place, he glanced up and saw Emerson standing at the portrait hole. "Emery!"

"Hello, George," Emerson grinned. She couldn't stop grinning, really.
