"one each loves them or despises them. foxes. cute, reddish balls of fur or annoying little brats stealing trash or spreading viruses. but, foxes are not always foxes. legend has it that certain fox spirits exist in this world. they're named kitsune, which is also the japanese word for fox. kitsune can be evil or kind—hearted, it depends. they appear as foxes with multiple tails, but can shape into every form they want to. also, kitsune own very different, supernatural powers."
i closed my book and looked up to my best friend, who sat next to me, chewing on her gum, strands of black hair falling into her face. "hm, this really sounds interesting. and, why are we here again?", she continued, motioning around the old hall of the city's library. "i mean, we could also go out, or plan our trip to seoul, i don't know..", she sighed. "it is because my teacher in japanese decides to not like me. so, she gave me this assignment to do.", i answered, shoving a sheet of paper in my friend's face. "trust me, i would also rather sit at home, sipping coffee and planning our trip. but you know, grades are important.", i sighed and continued to focus on the book in front of me.
the next minutes were filled with silence, except for the rustling of the pages or the scratching noise emerging from my pen. after a while —i noticed my friend getting impatient already— i closed the book and placed it back to where it originally belonged to. after packing my stuff, i pinched my friend's shoulder, signalizing that i was ready to go. "ugh, finally. i thought i was falling asleep.", she complained on the way outside, causing me to chuckle.
as soon as we where outside, we snuggled deeper in our coats, as the cold air hit us like tiny, sharp needles. "ugh, korean winters are the worst!", i exclaimed, and the both of us hurried through the town, on the way to our favorite café. as soon as we reached our destination, i let out a sigh of relief, when the warm air greeted my frozen face and fingers.
we sat on a table and ordered something to eat and drink. and that's where i saw him first. the young man with the bright, orange hair dye. he was seated in another corner of the café, eyes focused on a book he was — obviously — reading, here and now sipping from his mug. i slightly nudged my friend's arm and nodded in direction to where the handsome stranger sat. "he's good looking.", was all i said.
"then go get him girl!", the other girl cheered — a bit too loud — and caused me to lower my head in slight embarrassment. "why do you always have to be so loud and obnoxious?!", i whisper-yelled at the other, who just chuckled. "because you're always that quiet beautiful girl in school who's sitting in the back of the cafeteria reading a book.", (f/n) said, looking me with a stern face—well, she tried to. "and most of the boys are too scared to even approach you, just because you're so damn beautiful and unreachable.", she went on. "well, and i think that you're just plain stupid now.", i replied with a soft smile on my lips.
some time had already passed, and we decided to leave now. outside, it had already gotten dark, and only the street lamps lightened our way home. when we got up, i realized that we had to walk past the handsome stranger. said one lifted his head and nodded at us, and i automatically smiled and bowed slightly, as my parents told me to do so whenever i encountered a stranger. he returned the smile, and damn, was his smile handsome! it made him look even better than before.
as soon as we were outside of the building, i gripped my friend's shoulder tightly, letting out a tiny screech. "oh my dear god. did you see that? he smiled at me, i think i'm blessed now.", i rambled on, shaking (f/n)'s shoulders to emphasize what i was saying. "oh my god, calm down! but you're soo damn right! well, you should have said hello or asked for his telephone number.." "are you insane? imagine a complete stranger randomly asking for your phone number. don't tell me you'd actually hand it over then."; and my friend agreed with this argument.
