"in front of me stood the hunter."
—
i knew it was the hunter just by glancing at him. the older man was clad in dark green clothing, his eyes searching behind my frame standing here. he had his hands jugged into his pockets, but what alarmed me the most was the gun dangling from his belt at the side of his hip. i never had any contact with the hunter—my grandparents always said he was a man of bad words, someone with a rotten heart and an evil mind. right now, when i saw his icy blue eyes staring into mine, i could understand. as a small child, i would have been scared by him.
"may i help you, sir?", i asked, a sweet and innocent smile plastered on my lips. if i appeared to be nervous, he would assume i was hiding something. and i really had the feeling that this man was here because he saw taehyung an me earlier, walking through the streets —probably he saw the big wolf, and thought it was some dangerous creature?—. what should i do? nothing seemed to be the right solution.
"some citizens saw you in the streets of our city earlier, accompanied by a big wolf. may i ask you were you found that beast?", the other said, eyes narrowing only the slightest, and i cleared my throat. "first, i would prefer you not calling this wolf a 'beast', it is highly inappropriate. second, it is not a wolf, rather a crossing between dog and wolf, those exist, you know?", i replied sharply, and angry gleam to be seen in my dark irises. this was something my grandparents had told me about, so the lie slipped smoothly past my lips.
the hunter just raised his eyebrow, seemingly debating if he was to believe me or not. in the end, the tall man sighed, taking a step back. "if he does anything that may threaten the other citizens, i will take out this gun and shoot him, if necessary. keep that in your mind, miss." with that being said, the other walked away, not even sparing another glance. at first, i sighed in relief while shutting the door behind me, but then the truth dawned on me.
this meant we had to be extremely careful, if not even more. i knew how these citizens were like—conservative, skeptic when it came to new things or changes in their daily lives. something they didn't know, what they couldn't identify was also something they didn't like, something wrong. and they also didn't do much to maybe change this horrendous attitude of theirs. it was sickening.
"we have a problem. a big one.", i said the moment i was in the living room, causing the brunet to look at me with a surprised gaze in his chocolate brown irises, lips parted only the slightest. "the people here in my village think of you as a threat, or at least it appears like this—the hunter said he would shoot you down if you were acting aggressive.. or if he had the feeling you were threatening the citizens. we have to be extremely careful, tae, okay?", i said, a tint of sadness displayed in my voice, and the werewolf nodded, before suddenly reaching out.
the rough pads of his finger tips caressed my cheek, and a wide, boxy grin curled on his lips. "don't worry, (y/n). i know how to behave, and i am sure nothing bad will happen. don't worry so much.", the blond added, leaning forward to capture me in a strong, close to bone-crashing hug, his chin resting on top of my head. right now, i felt safe, secured, and protected in those arms. i couldn't believe i actually was about to build a connection towards him, feeling attached to him, even though i only met him a couple of hours ago, even if he wasn't human at all.
"anyway, taehyung? what do you like to eat?", i asked a while after relaxing into the silence, eyes closed and breathing steady. "i only had deer or something like that, my human form wasn't the one i liked.", he replied, a chuckle making it's way out of between his lips. "but of course you can... show me. the ways humans live, what they eat and vice versa."
"okay, then let's start right now! or.. later, if you're not hungry.", i said, obvious excitement clear in my voice, and gently pulled away from his hug, emitting a whine from the elder—which sounded just like a small puppy's yelp, causing me to laugh. "of course i am hungry! what do you want to try out?" "pancakes. my grandmother loved baking them for my grandfather and me. she always baked a lot of them, and then we sat at the table, eating and chattering along.", i reminisced in the memories, sighing sadly. "i miss them."
i felt taehyung's big hand reaching for mine, interlacing our fingers together, squeezing my hand. "then i think we should continue these traditions. i know that your grandparents knew about the mystical creatures living in the woods—they never showed anything close to mistrust or even hate towards us, and.. i am grateful to them.", he mumbled, facing the ground. i could sense his sadness.
quickly, to avoid any more negative emotions lure around in the house, i pulled him towards the kitchen. i taught —at least tried to, taehyung appeared to be quite clumsy— him how to make pancakes, how to set the table for dinner, and what else seemed to be important at this very moment. soon enough, the pleasant smell of freshly baked pancakes wafted through the air, and i placed the plate filled with steaming pancakes on the table. "let's eat well.", i said, bowing down quickly before digging in, taehyung just following what i was doing.
after the lunch, where taehyung asked me the most interesting of questions about humans, how they lived and if they ate only pancakes—questions i loved to answer, always a soft smile on my lips while explaining the big, wide world to him. seeing the sparkle of adoration, interest and much more in taehyung's dark brown irises made a warm sensation swirl in my stomach, making me wondering why i was feeling like this—he literally should be a stranger to me.
after lunch, which i named a "feast of pancakes", we were both splayed out on the huge couch in the living room, a small fire flickering in the fireplace, throwing shadows along the walls, and creating a quiet sizzling noise in the background—it was so calming. so, so calming. "i wish we could stay like this forever, right here, right now, with nothing and nobody to worry about.", taehyung said out of the blue, his slender fingers lazily stroking over my hair.
"then let's do that. let's stay here, enjoy each other's company and live a happy life. well, i would be really glad if you decide to stay here, and be a companion. i don't want to be alone anymore.", i murmured, head leaning against his build (and clad in one of my grandfather's old shirts) chest, a soft, yet happy smile on my lips.
"let's have your happy ever after."
