part 7 of the evil series.

ghosts do not exist, every child knows about that. each and every of those creepy and disturbing stories about ghosts are not true. they were just created to scare little children, or to prevent someone from doing something—as in moving into a new house.

because ... that's exactly what happened to me. raising an eyebrow, i looked at the elderly lady who just shook her head, over and over again. "you can not move in there, miss! this place is haunted! the previous owners told me about cold winds breezing past them, creepy sounds when someone was alone in the house, or that they felt a presence near them.", the woman croaked, causing me to sigh. "i am really sorry, ma'am, but this house is just so pretty. and i need a new start, so this is the perfect opportunity for me.", i said, gently taking the keys from her shaking fingers.

"don't worry. i personally don't believe in gods. and, my father always said: nothing exists until you believe it exist.", i went on, bowing once again, before i made my way to the big house. it was really, really big, and very, very old. the reason as to why the price was lower than usual was, that the neighbors and also the politicians believed it was haunted. "stupid.", i murmured and unlocked the door, stepping into the enormous hallway.

the house was —as i said before— damn old, and so there was dust in nearly every corner, cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, and the floor creaked with each step i took into the house. "well then ...", i sighed and placed the two bags on the floor. "let's go." i was glad that i was allowed to clean the house thoroughly before i would move in. i mean, who would like to live in house that was just reeking of dirt?

"oh my god, that was a lot of work!", i sighed as i was —hours and hours later— finally finished with cleaning the house. well, it was completely empty, so i wouldn't have to clean the furniture and more as well. taking a look at my watch, i realized that it was already 6 pm. i had called the workers two hours ago, telling them they should get ready—i just wanted to get over with the move.

11 pm. "phew, that was so much work. thanks guys! wouldn't even be finished in a week without your help!", i smiled at the workers and bowed, before i bid farewell. okay, a few things were still missing, like the television, parts of the kitchen and a heating system. but i would take care of that the next days. right now, i just wanted to hop into bed, and let sleep overcome me.

the first creepy happening occurred on my way to the bedroom. the cold air brushing past me made me shiver and wrap my cardigan around my small frame more tightly. "where did this come from? hm, the windows are closed.", i wondered. then, the elderly lady's words popped into my head. she said something about cold air. "no, ghosts don't exist.", i whispered. this was an old house, and the heating system wasn't installed yet, so of course it was cold in here!

the second thing happened when i was lying in bed, listening to some music, trying to calm myself. all of a sudden, a shadow i saw from the corner of my eye caught my interest. the only thing alighting the room, was a small lamp at the side of my bed, and this shadow definitely wasn't mine. "what the heck?", i mumbled and got up, causing the shadow to disappear all of a sudden. "man, this is getting really scary...", i whispered to myself, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
