My eyes remain shut.

"Would you like it shorter?"
Begrudgingly, I open my right eye and then my left. My hair, wet and limp, is about three inches shorter than before, reaching just under my breasts.
I nod, showing the hairdresser with my hand how short I'd like my hair.
She nods in acknowledgment, clipping up a chunk of my hair and snipping away at another chunk.

I don't dare move an inch. On the mirror I can see that Megan is done with her hair cut and is now bleaching part of her hair.
"Your hair is really thick. You must take great care of it, huh?" The hairdresser says conversationally. Her lip piercing glints as she smiles, and I shrug.
"I've always sort of neglected my hair. Until recently."
"A natural blonde." She murmurs as she runs her nimble fingers through my hair. "It's a lovely shade."
"Thanks." I try to smile but it comes out as more of a grimace.
"Are you happy with the length?" She asks again, and this time, upon inspecting myself, I nod with a more acceptable smile. "Great!" She chips, combing through my hair and plugging in a hairdryer.
I wait patiently as she yanks a cylindrical brush through my hair, simultaneously dragging the mouth of the hairdryer along. I clench my teeth to keep from making any noise.
After a couple of minutes, the hairdresser steps back and examines my reflection in the mirror. She beams satisfactorily to herself, widening it when she sees me grin as well.
My hair now reaches my collarbones, and because of her expertise, it's been shaped to look straight and well-shaped. I thank her as she removes the apron from around me.
I stretch my legs as I get off the chair, feeling my muscles relax. Heading over to Megan, I see her in an animated conversation with her hairdresser.
"-with Ana? Like, why?" Meg exclaims, making her new friend shake his head in disappointment.
"Oh, hey, Lu." My best friend smiles at me through the mirror. "You look great."
I thank her.
"I'll probably be a while. You and the boys can head out for a bit and I'll call you when I'm almost done."
"Sounds good." I oblige and walk to the waiting area.
Matt and Nathan are watching a video on the latter's phone, and from where I'm standing, it looks like basketball. I've never seen the two of them this engrossed in something before.
I think my shoes make too much noise, because Matt snaps his head up, followed by Nathan. The former stares at me and a hint of a smile appears on his lips.
Suddenly feeling self conscious, my breathing slows down and my hands begin to sweat. I notice Nathan look at Matt, me and then back at Matt, amusement dancing in his brown eyes. I try to smile but my mouth feels stiff.
"It's unfair how gorgeous you look." Matt comments and my heartbeat quickens, head spins and words escape me completely. My inner dictionary is blank.
