Midnight Confessions

♚ M a t t ♚

It has been a week since I spoke to Lucy.

No, correction: it has been a week since Lucy spoke to me.

It may not sound like a lot, but ever since Lucy and I began talking to each other, we never stopped for such a long time. Which only brings me to one question.

Why is she ignoring me?

I feel dread latch onto my every cell as I begin to think of reasons. Did someone say something bad about me to her? Did something happen to her? Is Lucy dead?

Okay so maybe the last one is slightly exaggerated. She can't be dead. I'm pretty sure I'd know if she were.

I contemplate whether or not I should be bold and just show up at her house. Would that freak her out? It wouldn't be my first time doing such a thing. Maybe I should wait till it's dark and climb through her window. It would be staying authentic to the thing that was ours.

I settle with just that and go about my day. I spend a little time playing basketball and practicing shots. When I'm about to get the ball in the basket for the sixteenth time in a row, Julie appears.

"Mattoo!" She waddles over with a missing-toothed-grin on her little face. "Teach me how to play!"

"You wanna learn basketball?" I ask, feeling proud.

"Yeah I wanna beat Alex Lee from the park."

I chuckle, recalling the cute little kid who Julie meets regularly at the park. They always compete regarding things, and I'm guessing basketball is the newest thing they're competing in.

"Do you guys only take shots?" I bend down to make eye contact with her. One time, she leaned back so much to make eye contact with me that she fell over and hit her head. I chuckle at the thought.

"Yeah and I wanna make him cry!" She says fiercely. Now, any good, responsible and morally correct brother would teach her about sports being all about enjoying yourself and not about winning. The problem is, I am none of those things and I would never take away the opportunity of my little sister feeling satisfaction from watching her opponent lose.

" Alright kid, let's get going then. To your post we go." I carry her on my shoulders to the short post that used to be mine as a kid.

"Why can't I practice on the big one?" Julie whines.

"Because my foot is longer than you in length and you're not strong enough to get the ball up so high yet."

"What's a leng?" She asks as I put her down.

"Length is tallness, pipsqueak. Now, let's turn you into a champion."

"I'm tired, Matty." Julie huffs and sits down on the pitch. I sit down beside her and take her on my lap.

"Do you want to call it a day? You did very well, Jules."

And it's true. Julie is a quick learner and got most of the shots in. She did stumble a little because of her size, but regardless of that, she did incredible and I'm very proud of her.

"Did I do good enough to make Alex Lee cry?"

I chuckle and ruffle her blonde hair, "I'd say you did, kiddo. Let's go get a drink."

With that I stand up and pick her up and place her on my shoulders. I make my way to the kitchen, being careful as to not let Julie hit her head anywhere.
