You & I Were Fireworks

"Lucy, wasn't it?" Matt's mother asks, her face flushed.

I nod. I try to smile, but it probably makes me look like I'm constipated.

"Have you seen Matt?"

I shake my head. "Can't say I have."

Her face falls.

"Is there something I can help with?"

"Well, can you help me bring more food out?"

"Of course."

"Thank you, sweetie." Shannon smiles warmly. I follow her to the kitchen, where platters upon platters of food are set up. A boy who seems to be of about my age advances towards the exit with a bowl of some kind of concoction in his hands.

"Sean, honey, I couldn't find Matt but Lucy here was willing to help."

He raises his eyebrows. "I told you I was good on my own, Shannon." Sean chuckles.

"Too bad." She retorts, making him laugh.

"Did the food really run out?"

Shannon shakes her head. "A bunch of Matt's cousins just arrived. We'll need more food." he nods. "Just direct Lucy, would you? I need to get Julie ready."

"Sure thing." he assures as she leaves. I take in a deep breath, nervous about the new company. "Hey, you're the girl from the beach, right?"

I look up from my feet. "I mean, there are plenty of girl who go to the beach . . . "

His eyes sparkle in amusement. "The one who roasted Allison."

"Is that what they're referring to me as?" I try to laugh, but it comes out shakily. I decide to occupy myself with a plate full of some sort of bars.

"Well, I'm not sure about the others." He chuckles, walking out of the kitchen and gesturing for me to follow him.

"I can't say that's who I've always aspired to be." I grumble, my gaze downwards as to not trip over.

"That's life for ya, Lucy."

"There you are, Matthew!" Mom huffs.

I blink a few times at her. "What's up, Ma?"

"I needed help from you to carry the food out."

I stand up straight. "I'll do that now."

"That's not an issue anymore, sweetheart. Your friend, Lucy, offered to help out."

I smile a little. "She did?"

"Yes." Mom smirks at me and pats my back. "Noe go outside and enjoy. Where's Julie?"

"She said she had to pee but I think its just part of her tantrum." I explain. My little sister was fussing about what she wanted to wear so I decided to help calm her down. Alas, I didn't do a very good job.
