"Jason, oh my gosh WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" I yell as I quickly take out the dish from the oven. I stare at the whole stick of butter on top of the apple crumble.
"You told me to put butter on top of it before cooking it." Jason defends himself.
"Yes, butter chunks. Not an entire slab of it!"
"How was I supposed to know that?!" My brother's voice goes up an octave.
"Common sense?" I counter.
"You know I don't watch Food Network, Lucy."
"You don't need to watch anything cooking related to know not to toss in half a pound of butter on top of dessert."
"Whatever, I'm switching to making the salad." He huffs.
Rolling my eyes, I direct him towards the counter-top where I was slicing up the salad ingredients. He does that while I scatter small bits of butter onto the pastry.
Once the two of us finish preparing lunch, Jason goes upstairs to call Rebecca while I set the table. So far, I haven't had to see Barbara, so everything in the house has been quite peaceful. However, she comes back today, so my anxiousness is at a peak.
I made sure to clean the entire house so she has less to complain about. Jason and - to my surprise - Rebecca helped me clean, so the work didn't take too long.
After lunch, Rebecca and Jason do the dishes, leaving me to water the plants.
"I'll help once I'm done with these." Jason informs, gesturing to the plates he's washing.
I nod in acknowledgement, walking to the storage room outside to get the watering can. The previous furniture have been removed, making more space for miscellaneous items. I'm not entirely sure as to what Barbara did with them, though.
Halfway through watering the plants, Jason takes over.
"Mom should be here in an hour." He informs, making my chest tighten slightly.
"Right." I mumble, fumbling with my fingers. "I'm gonna take a shower now."
"Alright." Jason smiles at me, which I return before leaving to the bathroom.
My shower is brisk and comprises of me majorly standing under the warm rain while thinking of approximately seventy-eight different things. I mentally play out what I'm going to say to Barbara. The last time I spoke to her was during Jason's birthday, and that wasn't all that pleasant, If I'm being honest.
I'm yet to decide how exactly I feel about being back here. I feel like a cherry blossom tree; bits of me are falling out, but hey, at least those around me enjoy the view.
