"Hey," Jason mumbles, rubbing his palm up and down the side of my arm. "Lu, why don't you take a nap? We'll figure this out later."
The only sound I provide is a series of retched sobs, one quieter than the previous. I will myself to breathe more thoroughly, to stop being such a baby over something so stupid.
It isnt stupid, though. That woman was my mother, the person who gave birth to me. There's no denying it either because her face definitely resembled mine.
Ever since dad died, I thought Jason was the only family I had left. Why did she just suddenly decide to come back?
"Come on, let's go upstairs." Jason coos.
I nod weakly, wiping my face with the back of my hand, trudging up the stairs. I lock myself in the bathroom, inhaling deeply, hands gripping the edge of the sink.
I stare at my disheveled reflection. My eyes are pink, and narrow from the swelling. There are transparent steaks going down my cheeks, like the trail left by a snail.
If I had gray orbs, my features would only match hers that much more.
Sniffing, I splash water on my face, the cool liquid doing all it can to conceal my visible misery. Droplets fall onto my shirt, becoming darker where it's wet.
I rinse my mouth too, ridding it of the viscosity. Besides the puffiness and redness of my eyes, I look fine.
When I get out to go to my room, I hear chatter coming from Jason's room. This makes me speed-walk to my destination. As much as I love and trust Nathan, I don't quite want to talk about this situation just yet.
Sleep doesn't grace me with its presence as easily as it does ordinarily. My mind is occupied with thoughts about dad, about the extremely little I know of what happened before May left, and flashes of teary gray eyes.

"Nathan, don't wake her up."
"I just want to leave this for her."
My eyes open heavily, and I'm granted with a fuzzy image of a boy. Upon blinking a few times, I see Nathan leaning over the nightstand, facing me like a deer caught in headlights.
"Oh, shit." He mumbles, glancing sideways at the figure by the door. "You're dreaming, Lucy. Close your eyes." He utters mistily, wiggling his arms and torso to mimic, I'm guessing, a ghost.
"Nice." Jason deadpans.
I snort out a laugh despite myself, removing the blanket from around me and sitting up. My eyes trail to what Nathan's holding.
"What's that?" I ask with a dry voice.
Nathan grins, showing me a picture frame. There's a picture of the two of us in it, with Nathan's arms locked around my neck from behind, and one of my hands gripping under his right thigh. His other foot is on the ground. We're both hunched over, laughing.
If I recall correctly, this was taken the day we went shopping, after he bought his bath bombs. He demanded I give him a piggy back ride, and I decided to humor him and go for it.
Because he's taller than me, I couldn't really carry him. We tried getting him to let me carry one leg at a time, but after he swung one leg beside my waist - which was probably when this picture was taken - he couldn't figure out how to get the other one up. Later, he tried jumping onto me, which resulted in us collapsing due to my lack of upper body strength.
