It's been two weeks since Liam found out Y/N was, not only the coach's daughter, but also the one who took his spot on the team. Since then he's done everything he can to avoid her. He wasn't mad at her. He was mad at the situation. The fact was he liked Y/N. He was instantly attracted and drawn to her, but he hated that she was the one that took the one thing he loved most and it wasn't even her fault. The thought alone made his blood boil and he knew he needed some time and space to cool off. He couldn't be around her knowing he would hold a grudge every time they were together. So he did what he thought was best, avoid her at all cost.
Y/N knew why Liam was so upset and she didn't blame him, but she wasn't expecting him to completely freeze her out. She tried talking to him, but he always made the excuse of having to go somewhere. She eventually figured out he had convinced Mason to get to history class first and sit at the desk next to her. Liam always managed to walk into class a second before the tardy bell rang, leaving Liam no choice but to sit in the only available seat in back of the class.
She liked Liam. He was cute and he was her first friend in school. She hated that she lost the one person she felt comfortable with since she transferred schools. She tried getting along with the guys on the team, but they didn't want to be friends with the person who took away one of their best players. Eventually she gave up on making friends and would just hang out at the library during her lunch and free period.
Liam saw Coach Finstock making his way down the hallway he needed to get through to get to his biology class. Without thinking twice, Liam turned on his heel and started walking the opposite direction. He didn't care if it was the long way to class, he'd rather be late than run into Coach Finstock. He had done so well avoiding him as well since he benched him two weeks ago.
Liam pushed his way through the crowd without trying to knock anyone in the process. Coach Finstock saw the brown haired boy rushing through the crowd, ducking his head down, obviously trying to hide from someone. Coach grabbed the whistle hanging from around his neck and put it between his lips. The loud sound caused everyone to freeze mid-walk in the hallways except for one student, the student Coach Finstock was trying to get his attention. "Dunbar!"
The students resumed walking to their classes once they realized the whistle wasn't for them. Liam however kept on walking, ignoring Coach Finstock's shouts.
"Move," Coach Finstock told a kid who was walking slow in front of him. "My grandmother walks faster than you and she's dead!" He shoved the kid aside. He kept uttering how slow these kids walked and how they should be running in his PE class as he made his way towards Liam.
Once Coach Finstock reached Liam, he grabbed his shoulder and turned him around to face him. "Dunbar! You're back on the team."
Liam's eyes narrowed at the eager coach. "No."
"No?" Coach Finstock let out a small 'ha!' before his facial expression completely changed to a serious one. "I wasn't asking."
Liam's eyebrows pulled together as the bridge of his nose scrunched up in anger. "Well, neither was I." Coach Finstock gave him a confused look as he tilted his head. Liam rolled his eyes. "Oh, you know what I meant. I'm not going back on the team just to ride the bench."
"No, you'd be starting again."
Liam tried not to look surprised. He knew the first string was set. He hadn't heard anyone else quitting or someone getting injured that would prevent them from playing. So what happened? He thought to himself.
"What? Why?" He asked.
"Someone on the first string quit and I'm not moving anyone up from second string because they suck." Coach Finstock admitted. "Especially Greenburg. You know how much I hate him."
