The day after
The end of a floral scarf hung off the shelf of Liam's locker as he opened it. His eyebrows pulled together in confusion, wondering whose scarf that belonged to and what it was doing in his locker. He pulled it out and wrapped it loosely around his hand and pulled it to his nose, inhaling deeply to catch a scent. It had a hint of perfume, but he didn't recognize it.
"Nice scarf," Mason spoke up as he walked up to his best friend with Corey and Hayden. "Not exactly your color though."
Liam rolled his eyes at Mason before looking at Hayden. He offered her the scarf, "did you leave this in my locker?"
Hayden shook her head. "That's not mine and truthfully, pink and flowers aren't my thing."
Liam looked down at the scarf as he pulled it away from Hayden. "If it's not yours, then whose is it?"
"Lydia? Maybe Kira?" Corey offered. Liam shook his head, knowing it didn't belong to either of them.
"Ooooooor maybe it was a girl who likes you!" Mason said enthusiastically. "Maybe she somehow got your locker combination and left it there for you to smell and sniff her out. You know like an adorable puppy finding their owner after playing hide and seek," Mason rambled, earning a snort from Corey and a giggle from Hayden.
Liam's eyes furrowed, narrowing his eyes at his best friend. "Where the hell do you come up with these ideas?"
"What?" Mason gave him a 'bro, seriously?' look as if his theory wasn't stupid and was in fact a real hypothesis. "Everyone in school knows about you since you wolfed out in front of everyone at the lacrosse game last year. It shouldn't be surprising if that's why a girl left it there." He said in a matter of fact tone.
Liam tossed the scarf back in his locker and gave it a second look. Something about the scarf told him he should hold on to it. His eyes flickered to the inside of the locker door. There were four magnets aligned in a perfect rectangle shape, as if it was holding up the corners of a picture. Except, there wasn't a picture. It was just his locker. His eyes scanned the door, almost trying to figure out what's missing.
He pushed the thought back and snapped back to reality. He closed his locker and shook his head at his best friend, remembering his previous statement. "Sometimes I really question what goes through your head, Mason."
"Hey!" Mason said defensively, obviously hurt.
"I think it's adorable," Corey smiled as they walked to their next class together, biology.
"Are you going to find out who the scarf belongs to?" Hayden asked Liam.
Liam shrugged his shoulder. "Nah, I got other things to worry about. I got a big game Friday night." Liam sat down in his seat and pulled out the things he needed for biology.
A Week Later
"Hey, Liam!" Liam stopped walking in the middle of the hallway and turned around to see Hayden walking towards him, her smile growing wider as she got closer. The corner of his lips turned up, giving her a small smirk.
When Hayden caught up to Liam, she placed her hand on his forearm. He stopped himself from looking down at her hand as he was completely caught off guard. Granted, they had been spending more time together and getting to know each other better this past week, she had never done that before. Something about her small action made Liam feel uneasy about it, as if she shouldn't be doing that and someone else should be instead. He shook off the feeling and looked up at Hayden. "What's up, Hayden?"
