You didn't see it the first time because your eyes were glued to the road in front of you as you raced down the streets back to Beacon Hills, hoping the Dread Doctors hadn't found out Liam and Hayden escaped, but you saw it the second time.
"It's gone. The pain's gone." Hayden's voice echoed from the back seat. "How did you do that?" She asked Liam.
"I don't know," Liam's soft voice was above a whisper, but you heard it loud and clear with your werewolf hearing.
You looked at the rear view mirror just in time to see Liam and Hayden kissing. Your heart sank. He was your best friend, who you were secretly in love with, and she was your newest friend, who had no idea how you felt about the boy she's locking her lips with, but you should have known it was bound to happen. The bickering and arguing was a façade to hide their real feelings. The way he suddenly cared about paying her back the $200 he owed her, defending her against Scott in the locker room the other night, and the two of them held hostage together would force them closer. You just knew in the back of your mind, it was bound to happen, but you were still hopeful it wouldn't happen.
You looked away from the rearview mirror and focused back on the road. In a matter of minutes, you pulled up in Scott's driveway. You watched them lean into each other, supporting each other as they made their way into the house and to the couch. You asked if they needed anything, but they politely declined your offer and said they needed some rest. You understood as you walked over to the closet to pull out some blankets and pillows only to return to see them fast asleep in each other's arms.
It pained you to see them together. Your chest was tight and you could slowly feel your heart coming undone into pieces as you stood frozen in place, unable to move. Lydia grabbed a blanket out of your hands and placed it over the cuddling duo on the couch. She walked over to you, your eyes still glued on Liam and Hayden until you felt Lydia's hands squeezing your shoulders, pulling you out of your trance. The look in her eyes was apologetic and for a moment you realized she knew. You never told anyone, but somehow she knew and then it clicked. Of course she knew; she goes through this every time she sees Stiles with Malia. Your eyes locked with hers, having an unspoken and understanding conversation. She pulled you in for a hug and you hugged her back tight but you didn't let it break you. You weren't ready for that yet because you knew once you broke down, you wouldn't stop. So you fought against the tears brimming around the edge of your eyes and the sob forming in the back of your throat, and just held on to the comfort Lydia was offering.
You broke apart as soon as you heard the door open. Scott was the first to walk in and a wave of relief washed over his worried face the second he saw Liam and Hayden sound asleep and safe. He rushed over, you and wrapped his arms around you as he whispered a thank you. You simply nodded and hugged him back, still avoiding any way to release the sob forming at the back of your throat, begging to be released.
After exchanging hugs with the rest of the pack, you finally broke your silence as you let out a deep shaky sigh. "I'm going home," you whispered, but you sounded so broken. "I'm tired."
Normally you would have stayed and slept over with the rest of the pack, but it was just too hard knowing Liam and Hayden were on the couch together asleep. It would have kept you up all night tossing and turning. Besides, you needed to break down and you couldn't do that with the entire pack in the same room.
The pack understood and waved goodbye. As you walked away you heard Stiles going after you but Lydia stopped him. "She needs to be alone right now." You heard her whisper to him as you walked out the door.
You jogged two houses down and walked into a dark empty house. You had never been happier about your father being away on business, which was a first. You always hated his job for constantly having him out of town and missing out on stuff a single father should experience with his daughter. However, given everything that happened tonight, you were glad he was gone so he wouldn't see you wallow or hear you crying yourself to sleep.
